Clydebank team boss Budgie McGhie revealed he was “not quite sure how to be feeling right now” following his side’s 3-0 victory over Super First Division promotion rivals Cumnock on Saturday.

“The players were great and did everything we asked of them out there today and the performance in the circumstances has to be one of the best in my time here as manager,” said the victorious gaffer.

"But this is not the end of our long journey as we have one more extremely difficult game to play against Rutherglen Glencairn on Wednesday night and my mind has already started to tick towards that one.

“It’s taken a momentous effort to get us this far and let’s not forget we could still come up short, however I’m pleased for our players and supporters that we have given ourselves a chance of getting over the line.”

Clydebank were first to settle in a nervy opening 45 minutes and went in front around the half hour mark through a close-range Joel Kasabundi counter that was all that separated the combatants at the halfway stage.

Cumnock had to go for broke, but throwing players forward left gaps at the back that speedy Bankies winger Mark Burbridge exploited to the full.

And his run and pass firstly set up Jordan Shelvey to double his side’s advantage before his 70th-minute cross allowed Nikky Little to head home for a 3-0 scoreline.

Cumnock’s failure to yet again get the better of a leading promotion rival -only three points have been earned from a possible 18 - came back to haunt them with a vengeance.

Yet John McKeown’s men can still finish up as champions if they take full points from their remaining three fixtures against Shotts Bon Accord (a), Cumbernauld United(h) and Kilsyth Rangers (a).

Current league leaders Largs Thistle dramatically assured themselves of promotion in their final league match after goals in the closing minutes from James Marks and Sean Pierce clinched a 2-1 comeback win away to Kilsyth for whom a Nikky Prentice goal had threatened a major upset.

The step-up hopes of ambitious Kilwinning Rangers hit the buffers as a result of Rutherglen Glencairn youngster Danny Salah hitting the only goal of the game at Abbey Park while newly up into fifth top spot are Blantyre Vics in the wake of Andy Sinclair and Scott Davidson scores securing a 2-1 triumph over relegated Maybole.

Earlier in the weekend, Auchinleck Talbot yet again took the New Coin Holdings West of Scotland Cup honours thanks to a fully merited 2-0 victory over fierce Ayrshire rivals Hurlford United.

And it must be debatable at the very least whether Talbot have encountered such a straightforward final success in any of their previous 11 West Cup wins after they had the game wrapped up before the half hour mark was reached.

A typically high-energy start brought a goal inside the first minute when Dwayne Hyslop’s cross to the far post was met by Mark Shankland - later named Man of the Match- and he buried a downward header beyond Ford keeper Ally Brown.

An understandably fired-up Talbot remained on the ascendancy, helped no end by a subdued United struggling to make any impact against a backline reinforced by the return from injury of imperious centre-back Martin McGoldrick.

Auchinleck's continuing superiority was rewarded in 28 minutes when a free kick award some 22 yards from goal saw Graham Wilson - outstanding in an unaccustomed midfield role – step forward to curl an exquisite shot over the wall and into the net to leave Brown helpless.

The second period saw Hurlford more to the fore as an attacking threat however their greater possession and territorial dominance was failing to carve out any clear-cut openings.

Indeed, if anything Auchinleck were looking the more likely to score on the break as shown by Hyslop hitting the upright with a far post header .

The game petered out to its conclusion and loud cheers in tandem with champagne corks popping greeted long-serving Talbot skipper James Latta receiving the trophy from sponsor Jimmy Gilligan.

A family matter kept Talbot boss Tommy Sloan away from the final and saw his No.2 Alan McLuckie offer the post-match summations.

He said: "The early goals gave Hurlford a mountain to climb and I felt we controlled the game and looked very dangerous in the forward areas even though the stats probably show they had more of the ball than us.

“ One or two players had to play out of position but I cannot single them out because everyone did their bit and it was a real team effort that won us the cup.”
