Is the name of Renfrew Juniors about to be added to list of this season’s trophy-winning shock troops…Leicester City, Hibs and Beith.

“I don’t see why we can’t ?", was the defiant reaction from Frew co-manager Colin Clark when it was put to him that the New Western Park club has never won the Evening Times Champions Cup in their 104-year history.

But 90 minutes football will be all that stands between that aim if Central First Division champions Renfrew come out on top when hosting the visit of Ayrshire League winners Girvan tonight in the first of this season’s semi-finals and both Clarky and dugout partner Martin Ferry are relaxed about the prospect.

Running the rule over Girvan in their penalty shoot-out win over Forth Wanderers at the weekend gave them food for thought but did not leave them quaking in their boots, according to former defender Clarky

He said: "Their players are not unknown quantities to us as Peter Leonard had quite a few of them in his very good Maybole side of recent years.

“They don’t lack for experience through the likes of David Cunningham, Scott Dinwoodie and Tony Murphy so our guys will be warned to expect a tough game of it particularly as Girvan are enjoying a terrific run of form but we have players who have been over the course.

“I’ve heard people say their demanding schedule of games - they also played on Monday night - is to our advantage.

"But I’m not so sure given our last game was all of a month ago because it’s anything but easy to keep players ticking over with such a long lay-off.

“And we are also facing the added problem of players heading off on holiday and that’s far from ideal even though we don’t lack for numbers in our squad.”

Meanwhile, amassing 12 points from their last five league outings has pushed Cumnock back into the Super First Division title reckoning - and they dare not blow it now.

That’s because John McKeown’s side will be crowned champions if they can win their final league game of the season tonight at home to Cumbernauld United.

However, anything less than all three points will see the Ayrshire giants denied an automatic promotion place and consigned instead to a testing play-off double-header against Shettleston.

To end up winning the title as a result of a better goals difference than current league leaders Largs Thistle is seen as a vindication of McKeown’s all-out attacking philosophy (only Kilwinning Rangers have netted more goals ).

He said: "We wouldn’t want it any other way than to have our fate in our own hands but nothing will be taken for granted as there’s still a very difficult opponent standing in the way of us being champions .”

Cumnock hope to get payback for resting a number of players in Monday night’s Ayrshire Cup defeat by Girvan and McKeown is believed to have his strongest line-up available inclusive of skilful winger Josh Watt, who is thought to be on the close season signing radar of Queen's Park boss Gus MacPherson.

Teenage goalscoring sensation Sean McKenzie, formerly of Ayr United, is expected to form Cumnock’s attacking spearhead along with Aidan Malone.

A must-win contest also beckons at the opposite end of the table for Yoker Athletic whose remarkable 6-4 comeback victory over Maybole on Monday night has left the Steven Reilly steered Whe Ho needing to pick up all three points in their final league outing against Ardrossan Winton Rovers to avoid relegation fate and send Greenock down instead.

Thought to be another Queen's Park signing target is Kilbirnie Ladeside’s prolific goalscoring midfielder Darren Miller, who, if rumours ring true, could be playing his final game in Blasties colours at Bellsdale Park tonight when Stevie Swift’s men make the short hop to take on triumphant ETHXenergy Scottish Junior Cup winners Beith.

The meeting of the long standing foes could be one to savour under the circumstances and set to be looking on from the terracings as an interested spectator is strong running Arthurlie winger Eddie McTiernan ,strongly believed to have committed himself to play his football out of Valefield next season.

Also back in action tonight are beaten Scottish Cup finalists Pollok whose manager Tony McInally is tipped to ring the changes for his club’s Euroscot Eng Cup last eight clash at home to lowly Port Glasgow with starting jerseys likely to be handed to Liam Rowan , Derek Hepburn and Robbie Winters.

In other quarter-final head-to-heads taking place, Super Premier Division outfit Rob Roy are strongly fancied to get the better of St Anthony's while home advantage could prove crucial for Rutherglen Glencairn in hosting the visit of Larkhall Thistle.
