THE words “Coming soon to a terracing near you” could well be an apt warning sign worn around the neck of Davie Greig who has owned up to snubbing several offers to get back into the Junior game.

Twenty years of continuous involvement as a player/coach or manager came to an abrupt end last season when Greggy resigned his Irvine Meadow manager’s post following the Ayrshire club’s relegation to the Super First Division.

Failing to prevent Medda’s fall from grace after taking up the reins last January disappointed the former Blantyre Vics and St Roch's gaffer, however he was widely tipped to get back in the ‘managerial saddle’ in time for the new season getting underway.

That hasn’t happened and may not in the immediate future after Greig revealed himself happy with his current role as a spectator.

He admitted: “The close season dealings with players ins and outs is always a horrible time and I was glad to be on the outside looking in this year.

“It’s been enjoyable to rest up and watch the goings on at various clubs and I found it easy to resist the temptation to get involved when a couple of clubs asked me to help out with pre-season preparations.

“Whether that feeling persists only time will tell and I’ve not been getting out and about as a result of making conscious decision to stay away from games in case my presence sets tongues wagging.

“I watched only one pre-season friendly, Petershill’s 2-1 win against Glasgow Perthshire and my first competitive game was the Shire’s 3-2 defeat by Ashfield last Saturday.

“My interest there was from 10-12 players on show who had previously played under me and I thoroughly enjoyed the game and talking with old friends.

“I do intend to cast the net further afield and take in other games from this weekend onwards but only in a watching brief.”

Greggy has revealed he will be returning to the dugout … temporarily at least … next Sunday, August 21, to take charge of a St Roch's XI lining up against a St Anthony's XI managed by legendary Ants boss James McKenna at the Jimmy McGrory Stadium (kick-off 2pm).

The game has been arranged in memory of defensive lynchpin Mark Ritchie who captained both Glasgow clubs but tragically died at only 34 years of age as a result of a freak accident when working abroad earlier this year.

The teams will play for the Matt Ritchie Memorial Cup (donated by his family) and proceeds from the game will go to Matt’s favourite children’s charity … The Make A Wish Foundation.

Meanwhile, in games played last night, Clydebank boosted hopes of securing an Exsel Group Cup last-eight spot with a 6-1 comeback win over Glasgow Perthshire at Holm Park.

Stewart Brodie had fired the Shire into a 1-0 lead shortly before the interval, however the Bankies crucially snatched a precious equaliser right on the half-time whistle through hitman Nikky Little.

A few harsh words from Budgie McGhie sparked the home side into seizing control on the resumption and newcomer Peter McGill netted his second goal in two games with a shot from just outside the area prior to Mark Burbridge setting up substitute Stevie Young to pave the way for a storming finale with a third goal.

Sparkling winger Burbridge added a fourth goal before Young underlined claims for a starting jersey with two late goals giving him a hat-trick on the night.

There were goals aplenty in Section 3 where cup holders Petershill ran out 6-2 winners away to Thorniewood United thanks to a treble from Luke Crerand and counters from Chrissy Hall, Fraser McGhee and Jason Brodie against a Thorniewood side depleted by the dismissal of stopper Terry Hewitt (2 yellows) when trailing 1-0.

The Peasy’s main challengers Shettleston were involved in an even higher scoring ding-dong affair at Greenfield Park before emerging as 5-4 victors over Bellshill Athletic.

A sensational opening saw four goals netted inside the opening 15 minutes with Greg McDonald, Peters Weatherson and Chris Kennedy on target for the Town while ex-Shettleston ace Chrissy MCormack responded for the visitors who pulled another goal back prior to half-time through Darren Simpson.

A header from McCormack levelled matters early in the second period, player boss Weatherson's free-kick made the scoreline read 4-3 only for Kyle Roberston to level matters for the visitors whose hopes of a share of the spoils were ended by a Ryan McStay shot from just outside the box clinching a 5-4 triumph.

Across the city, Pollok ran riot against hapless St Anthony's who had no answer as the Newlandsfield men won 9-0 with new signing Gary McCann helping himself to four goals added to a brace from Davie Winters and singles from Alan Mckenzie, Mark Sideserf and Derek Hepburn.

Shock of the night came at Fullarton Park where Vale of Clyde 2-0 ahead at half-time though James McKinstry(pen) and Scott McManus scores went down 3-2 to Cambuslang Rangers for whom Thomas Kilmartin, Kieran Chalmers and Bob Davidson were second-half marksmen.

There was a major upset in Ayrshire where Ardagh Glass Cup holders Hurlford United succumbed to a 4-3 defeat at home to Irvine Meadow for whom Ben Black, Trialist (2) and Mark McLennan were on the scoresheet.

Martin McGoldrick levelled for Auchinleck Talbot in a 1-1 draw with Glenafton for whom Chris Dallas was on the mark and Cumnock lead the way after Scott Anson, Willie Wells and Dale Shirkie scores secured a 3-1 success away to Kello Rovers.
