Rob Roy take on Pollok and Shettleston face Wishaw in the Exsel Group Sectional League Cup semi-finals to be played next midweek.

That was the outcome of last night’s quarter-final showdowns in which the only clean sheet was chalked up by the revamped Town who ran out 2-0 winners over Greenock thanks to goals in each half by Rikky McIntosh and Martin Welsh.

Co-bosses Peter Weatherson and Ryan McStay can now look forward to locking horns with another former senior in Chris McGrotty whose Wishaw side are among the last four for the second consecutive season.

Goals from speedy front man Ryan Smillie and veteran Mark Daly afforded Wishy the perfect start to their tie against Lesmahagow who pulled a goal back through top scorer Jack Currie to rise hopes of a comeback. They were quashed though by another Smillie score giving Wishaw a 3-1 success.

Matters looked bleak for Rob Roy’s hopes of another last four appearance hen a Kevin Green own goal allowed Clydebank to take the lead at Guys Meadow. However a Lee Gallagher spot kick leveller set up a thrilling finale which saw striker Kevin Watt head home an 89th minute winner.

The Rabs now host the visit of Cup favourites Pollok who were always to the fore in a 3-1 victory over Rutherglen Glencairn at Celsius Stadium.

Carlo Monti's early goal for the visitors was cancelled out by a Del McNab equaliser before the break. However Pollok’s desire to avoid a tongue lashing from gaffer Tony McInally saw them regain the lead with a well-struck 44th minute goal from Finlay Frye.

The Glens fought to get back on level terms once more but their hopes were undone by a close range opportunist score from Davie Winters, allowing Pollok to coast to a deserved 3-1 triumph.

The question down in Ayrshire’s Ardagh Glass Cup competition has to be who is going to stop Beith following the free scoring Mighty’s 8-0 crushing of quarter-final opponents Ardeer Thistle which followed last Saturday’s 9-1 hammering of Kilwinning Rangers.

Kenny McLean and Thomas Collins helped themselves to hat-tricks while the in-form Paul Frize and Connor McGlinchey were also on the mark

Looking the most likely to stop Johnny Miller’s men are Auchinleck Talbot who advanced to the semi-finals following a 2-1 defeat of Troon at Portland Park where all the goals arrived during the opening 45 minutes.

That most hard-working of front men Keir Milliken and prolific midfield goalscorer Dwayne Hyslop netted for Talbot to earn a 2-0 lead that was pegged back around the half hour mark by a Jordan Muir score for the home side. However all their attacking efforts came to nothing against a strong Talbot backline and the scoreline remained unchanged at the final whistle.

Kilbirnie Ladeside will also be making up the last four ater a hard fought 2-1 victory over Hurlford United in a Blair Park contest whose finish was delayed by a serious arm break suffered by United’s ex-East Stirling defensive signing Ross Fisher.

Ciaron Donnelly and Adam Forde netted for the Blasties whose advantage was halved by a counter from Hurlford front man John Gemmell. But his later red carding for an alleged stamping offence on visiting defender Mark Staunton left Darren Henderson’s men with too much of an uphill battle.

Last but not least of the semi-final qualifiers are Cumnock for whom Scott Anson weighed in with another two strikes (one from the penalty spot) either side of a Sean McKenzie counter as a battling Nock recovered from going 1-0 down to Girvan early into the second period at Townhead Park.

Last night's results: Exsel Group Sectional League Cup quarter-finals: Shettleston 2 Greenock 0, Lesmahagow 1 Wishaw 3, Rutherglen Glencairn 1 Pollok3, Rob Roy 2 Clydebank 1.

Ardagh Glass Cup quarter-finals: Hurlford Utd 1 Kilbirnie Ladeside 2, Cumnock 3 Girvan 1, Troon 1 Auchinleck Talbot2, Beith 8 Ardeer Thistle 0.
