TONY FRASER will be giving his all to help Rutherglen Glencairn pick up three Super First Division victories against Cumbernauld United tomorrow – even though he remains an outside bet to fill the vacant Guys Meadow managerial post .

The veteran full-back who famously skippered Cumbernauld to Sectional League Cup glory in 2014 has been caught up in the buzz that ensued in the aftermath of last week’s resignation by his former team boss John Queen.

He adamantly insists his is not one of the hats thrown into the ring yet does not rule himself out of accepting the hotseat post were it to be offered to him by leading United club official George Watson who somewhat pointedly said this week: “Saturday could give us a clearer idea of what to do.”

Fraser, a failed applicant for the Rossvale manager’s chair last season, distanced himself from this comment when speaking last night.

He admitted: “It crossed my mind to put my name forward particularly when some former team-mates were on the phone saying I should go for it but deep down I feel the job is coming too early for me so I shied away from contacting George.

“And admittedly it was not the easiest thing to do considering I had two hugely enjoyable and successful seasons at Cumbernauld and have nothing but good memories about the place and of course the people at the club.

“It really does come down to a timing issue because a year ago I was on a downer after picking up an Achilles tendon injury that saw me struggling to string appearances together and I’d probably have departed at the drop of a hat if Queeny had called it quits back then.

“But this season is an altogether different matter as I’ve got through the pre-season graft to feel so much better about my fitness and I’m of the mind to keep playing the game for as long as I possibly can .

“Not for one moment , am I kidding myself that I can go on forever but there’s a great deal of satisfaction to be derived from playing in this current Glens team – not least of all the fact I live just a short drive from the ground.”

An injured Fraser was a mere onlooker when Cumbernauld came away with a 2-2 share of the spoils on their last visit to the Celsius Stadium and he is predicting another close fought encounter tomorrow even though he and his Glens team mates are unbeaten in their three league outings to date.

He said , Cumbernauld actually took four points out of a possible six last season and they have a decent record against Glencairn in recent seasons however if whispers are to be believed then stand-in gaffer George Shaw is on the verge of introducing a number of loan signings from the Senior ranks .

“That could make a difference and so too can the great team spirit evolving in our dressing room as a result of starting the season so brightly because veryone is looking forward to the game …myself included …as we have designs on competing at the top end of the table which is night and day compared to last time out when it was apparent from very early on that our team was going to be in and around the basement .

“Willie Harvey has brought in a number of outstanding prospects from the District Leagues with Jordan Marshall (ex-Larkhall Thistle) and Jamie Hamilton (Lesmahagow) probably catching the eye even more than the group of ex-Rossvale signings who possess a great work ethic and will to win.

“Their enthusiasm is as you might expect from a predominantly young side – myself apart – and hopefully it will serve us well tomorrow and for the rest of this season.”

Meanwhile normally forthright Cumbernauld supremo Watson refused to disclose the names of managerial applicants as a matter of courtesy and respect .

He revealed: "What has to be pleasing is the fact we had 13 well-known names put forward so our intention is to decide on a shortlist who will then be interviewed to further help us make our minds up in order to have someone bedded in well before our next up game which is not until the first Saturday in October because of the holiday weekend.”

Elsewhere , for the second week running , frontrunners Yoker Athletic are taking part in a contender for “Super First game of the day” when Stevie Reilly’s side host the visit of strong going Girvan …the only team boasting a 100% league record .

And no doubt Kilsyth Rangers boss Keith Hogg will be urging his playing charges to harness home advantage to pick up three points against Irvine Meadow and hold onto second top spot in the standings ahead of Clydebank , strongly fancied to bounce back from last week’s derby reverse against Yoker, when heading into Ayrshire to take on lowly Irvine Vics.

Meanwhile, it would be understandable ahead of their forthcoming Exsel Group Cup finale with Rob Roy if Shettleston will look for the confidence boost of a first league win in four starts when heading through to face pointless Shotts Bon Accord .
