Pollok supporters heading into the Ayrshire heartlands tomorrow for their club’s Scottish Junior Cup third round replay against Auchinleck Talbot have just one question on their minds: Can history repeat itself?

And one can understand those among their travelling number wishing for a deja vu experience seeing as the last time they made a similar journey in the competition was in 1985 when the Dick Brock-managed side built around the spine of Jeff Curran, Stuart Auld, Gordon Wilson and Stuart Gordon headed for Beechwood Park following a hard-fought 1-1 stalemate on the Glasgow Southside.

Bookmakers rated Talbot as strong favourites to come good with home advantage and secure a last-eight place.

However, Brock’s men totally confounded the odds to run out emphatic 4-0 winners before going on to lift the coveted silverware through a memorable cup final replay triumph over Petershill.

Thoughts of achieving identical twin outcomes some three decades and a bit down the line brought a smile to the face of Lok's classy midfielder Colin Williamson as he looked ahead to tomorrow’s clash.

He said: "There is so little to choose between the teams that I cannot imagine a repeat scoreline and right now I’d gladly settle for a winning margin of any kind.

“We were pretty poor in last week’s first game and only kicked into gear when Talbot scored and the message struck home that we were going out of the cup if we didn’t.

“It was good to earn a second bite at the cherry, but we can probably count ourselves lucky to come away with a draw considering how badly we played and everyone in our dressing room is determined to give a better account of ourselves this time around.

“That’s easier said than done at one of the most difficult venues in Junior football and with Talbot roared on by an unbelievably passionate support.

"Yet I’m reasonably confident that we can win if we turn up and play to our abilities.

“ We didn’t at Newlandsfield possibly as a result of affording their players too much respect and I’d like to think we won’t make those same mistakes again.”

Lok gaffer Tony McInally believes the replay showdown has all the makings of an epic head to head between the Super Premier Division rivals.

He said: "Talbot won’t be holding back from the first whistle and neither will we as my players are aware we have to start better and give ourselves a platform.

“Indeed we will go there looking to get at them at every opportunity and the focus is firmly on our forward going types is to prove they can perform a lot better than they did first time around.

“Colin was outstanding and defensively we proved ourselves strong and resolute but a lot of players had more to offer than they showed and I see the replay as their chance to make a statement of intent.”

Macca refused to be drawn into revealing his playing hand despite a clamour among Lok supporters for a starting jersey to be found for striker Michael Daly who made an impact coming on as a second half substitute last week.

The team boss: "Mick did well and he certainly ruffled Talbot’s backline with his aerial ability however any team changes will be based upon what needs to be done in the context of our overall game plan.”

The only other replay contest is at Meadow Park where Irvine Meadow and Darvel lock horns just a week after sharing two goals and five red cards (four for Darvel) in a stormy Recreation Park affair.

Graham Boyd is set to lead the home team’s forward line after appealing his dismissal for alleged violent conduct and his partnership with ex-Darvel hitman Greg Vernon could swing things in Medda’s favour.

Supporters of Blantyre Vics are reminded that their side’s tie with Bo’ness United goes ahead at New Douglas Park (Kick-off 1.45pm) where the East Region big guns are strongly fancied to come good .

A similarly daunting task … along with a long trek …awaits Greenock in heading away early to take on current North Region Premier League leaders Stonehaven however tipped to fare better on their travels are the much improved Glenafton who are up on Tayside to face Dundee Violet.
