Gartcairn manager Davie Greig has been in dreamland ever since his side booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Scottish Junior Cup.

The Cairn secured their spot by beating Carluke Rovers at the second time of asking last weekend. The first match had finished 2-2 which set up the replay at Carluke’s John Cumming Stadium, with Gartcairn emerging victorious, winning 3-2.

But they will have to wait until Saturday to find out whether they will play Maryhill or Linlithgow Rose who face off in a postponed fifth-round tie.

The Airdrie outfit are the lowest ranked team still left in the competition and while Greig says it is an honour to make it this far he insists his side aren’t there just to make up the numbers.

“I know it’s a cliche but we are just happy to be in the quarter-finals alongside some of the best junior clubs in the country,” he said.

“It’s an amazing achievement for a club the size of ours to get to this stage of the biggest prize in Junior football.

“We are in the bottom league in the west region and were only established in 2015 so for us to get to the last eight of the Junior Cup is a dream come true.

“Everyone at the club, including myself, is in dreamland at the moment; what we have done thus far is way beyond what we could have expected.

“While we may be unlikely quarter-finalists it doesn’t mean we don’t deserve to be there.

“We are there on merit, we have beaten everyone that’s been put in front of us and we are aiming to keep doing that for as long as we possibly can.”

Tuesday’s Junior Cup draw rewarded Gartcairn with an away trip for their last-eight tie, but whether they face Maryhill or Linlithgow Rose, Greig is expecting an extremely hard game.

“No matter who we get in the next round I think we are going to find it very tough,” he said.

“Both Linlithgow Rose and Maryhill are quality sides with some really good players at their disposal.

“So as I said, regardless of who makes it through I know that we are in for a tough game but we are looking forward to the challenge.”

While Greig and his players can relax knowing their place in the quarter-finals is secure, not everyone has that privilege.

Those involved with Maryhill and Linlithgow Rose know there is still work to be done to keep their Junior Cup dreams alive.

Their cup tie has been postponed twice due to adverse weather conditions, but Maryhill boss John Hughes is hoping it will be third time lucky this weekend.

He said: “We are really hoping that we can get the game to go ahead at Lochburn Park this weekend.

“The weather around here has been really bad the last few weeks and the pitch has taken a real battering.

“However, our groundsman has been working really hard this week to get the park up to standard and hopefully we

will get the game on at the third try.”

Maryhill go into Saturday’s match as underdogs but Hughes insists his side are good enough to book their place in the next round.

He said: “We will go into Saturday’s game full of confidence that we can get the win we need to take us into the quarter-finals.

“While we have only played four games this year, we are still unbeaten in 2017 having won one and drawn three.

“While our upturn in form this year has given us some much-needed confidence, it doesn’t mean we will go into Saturday’s game expecting an easy win.

“We know that Linlithgow Rose are the favourites but we believe that we have enough about us to beat them.”

Saturday’s Scottish Junior Cup fifth round tie between Maryhill and Linlithgow Rose will take place at Lochburn Park with the action getting underway at 2.30pm.
