Among the many issues facing new Cumbernauld United manager Andy Frame, none is surely more pressing than the need to cement his club’s place in the Super First Division this season.

Hard to think otherwise given his appointment and that of backroom team allies J.P McBride and Billy McDonald only came about after a dismal run of league results under the stewardship of previous team boss George Shaw.

A run of just seven points amassed from a possible 36 saw the ambitious Guys Meadow side staring down the barrel of relegation.

But the new regime has undoubtedly got away to the best possible start with victories in their opening two games so it’s understandable that hopes are high of extending this winning run tomorrow when hosting the visit of Renfrew.

Frame tacitly admitted his delight with the early signs of progress in saying: "There is no doubt we have enjoyed the settling in period mostly because performances have given us little cause to complain and moving here was the right decision even though it was a big wrench to walk away from Thorniewood United.

“We had identified weaknesses in Cumbernauld’s central defence so being able to buy in the tried and trusted pairing of Davie Hamilton and Terry Hewitt from our former club has been crucial because their great experience and physical presence has helped plug the gaps and our racking up back to back clean sheets is not down to just coincidence.

“Davie is 36 years of age and outsiders may have questioned our bringing him on board but you only have to look at 40 year old Davie Dickson scoring both our goals in the 2-0 defeat of Yoker Athletic to know that age doesn’t matter one iota as long as a player has the right attitude and desire.

“He and Terry have struck up a terrific partnership yet I won’t deny making an approach to bring in Danny Boyle from Auchinleck last weekend in order to inject a bit of added competition and cover for the heart of our defence.

“Danny had expressed an interest in coming back to the club and a deal had been agreed between all parties right up until Rob Roy’s 11-th hour intervention caused the big man to change his mind.

“It’s disappointing how things worked out but we will continue to try and strengthen our playing squad whenever the opportunity arises.”

The former Partick Thistle midfielder’s signing of the highly rated Chris Lennon from Thorniewood has been put in the shadows by the emergence of precocious forward line prospect Jamie Watson .

Frame revealed , “Both myself and J.P .are on good terms with Barry Ferguson and he had marked our card on Jamie whom he was willing to put out on loan from Clyde but Barry then quit his post and we ended up landing Jamie on a free transfer.

“He is the 21 year old grandson of the Hamilton Accies legend Jim “Popeye” Dempsey and has been nothing short of outstanding in our games up to now so I have to pinch myself to believe that someone of his ability has landed on our lap.

“He has moved around a number of clubs in recent years and just wants to settle down and play regularly however much as I want to build a team around him , I worry that he is destined to play at a much higher level.

” But for the rest of this season we hope he can make the difference in ensuring Cumbernauld pick up the required amount of points to clamber clear of the basement area in this cutthroat league where every team is capable of beating each other.”

Frame is already casting his sights towards next season when he believes the Super First Division (barring West Region reconstruction of course) looks set to have an influx of top Ayrshire outfits .

He said: "The Super First Division is heavily stacked with Central clubs this time out but it’s looking like five of their number will be heading for pastures new to make way for the top pair from the Ayrshire District League as well as possibly three big name clubs from the likes of Largs Thistle, Kilwinning Rangers, Troon and Kilbirnie Ladeside.

“It has all the makings of the most competitive league division ever and our sights are set on being part of it.”

Promotion seeking clubs figure in tomorrow’s remaining three Super First however Frame thinks there may be an upset or two on the cards .

He said: "Bottom markers Irvine Vics ran out 4-1 winners over Irvine Meadow last Saturday so I’m not ruling out shocks in this week’s games.

“Petershill will find Blantyre Vics are no pushovers on n their own notoriously heavy Castle Park pitch while Shotts Bon Accord are a better team than results show and they have the players to give Clydebank a run for their money.

“And the other game has one of the form horses Rutherglen Glencairn (undefeated in their last eight league games) going up against second top Shettleston whose results you would have to say have been inconsistent in recent weeks .

“I took in Glencairn’s 4-2 defeat of Shotts last week and their forwards, were particularly lively so Shettleston’s defence could be in for a tough afternoon.”
