JUNIOR team boss John Fallon only ever does one game at a time and he was at pains to reiterate this mantra yesterday with his Shettleston side having reclaimed their place atop the Super First Division pile.

A late goal slotted home by newcomer Kieran O’Hear, snapped up last midweek from lower league Newmains United along with defensive midfielder Ross Callaghan, enabled the Town to leapfrog over Kilsyth Rangers, now trailing by a point albeit from two games fewer played.

Fallon revealed: “Both players really caught the eye when I watched them recently in a game against Shotts Bon Accord and their determination to impress along with the return from injury of Rikky McIntosh helped our cause no end on Saturday.

“Glencairn have bags of pace throughout their team and were on a terrific unbeaten run, but watching them in their previous game had me thinking Tony Fraser was the man who made them tick so we deliberately set our stall out to nullify his influence and limit the service to the striking pair of Del McNab and Jay McKay.

“Our game plan worked a treat but we have to put that behind us because all that matters now is the next game …a trip into Ayrshire to face Irvine Meadow.

“They are another top side still harbouring hopes of promotion and we need to have full focus on the challenge posed by them.”

Every bit as much a contender for any Super First Division game of the day tag is the Hamilton Park showdown of fifth-top Girvan against erstwhile league leaders Kilsyth Rangers.

There’s also sure to be more than a passing interest shown in basement battlers Shotts Bon Accord hosting the visit of in-form Cumbernauld United, seeking to further dispel their own relegation fears by racking up a fourth consecutive league win since Andy Frame assumed the Guys Meadow hotseat.

Davie Dickson, Billy Robb and Jamie Watson goals secured their latest three-points haul against Renfrew who will be itching to avoid back-to-back defeats when making the short hop through to face Yoker Athletic at Holm Park.

And word on the grapevine reckons St Roch's, whose pursuit of the Central First Division title was dented on Saturday by being held to a 1-1 draw at home to rivals Larkhall Thistle, have suffered another damaging blow after on-loan stopper Dom McLaren was recalled by Lowland League champions elect East Kilbride who are wanting to have the highly-rated 20-year-old available for the promotion play-offs.

And ambitious East Kilbride boss Martin Lauchlan, formerly of Rossvale Juniors, has also thwarted a number of Super Premier Division clubs by landing the signature of one-time Petershill midfielder Paul Woods following his surprise release by Queen's Park.

Meanwhile, hard not to think Ayrshire fans will be hoping that Auchinleck Talbot and Glenafton are kept apart when their names and that of East Region pair Bonnyrigg Rose and Linlithgow Rose go into the hat when this season’s Scottish Junior Cup semi-final draw is made at Hampden Park at 2pm.

Eleven times record winners of the silverware, Auchinleck are the team to avoid according to bookmakers while Glenafton and last season’s East Region champions Bonnyrigg are next in the betting.
