Two second half goals ensured Clydebank boss Kieran McAnespie’s first ever return to his former Junior club Petershill ended unhappily on Saturday.

A sublime Stephen McGladrigan finish and stunning free kick effort from ex-Bankie Chris Wilson decided this Central League Cup tie outcome in favour of the Springburn outfit in what was a proverbial game of two halves – the first 45 minutes dominated by the visitors who were then totally outplayed by their hosts after the break.

“I feel for my players," said a clearly disappointed McAnespie afterwards.

"They are a terrific bunch with a great willingness to work at their game, but unfortunately they are learning lessons the hard way.

“To create several clear cut chances in the first half against a team of Petershill’s quality was pleasing even if we didn’t put the ball in the net and both Marc McDonald and I were urging the players to keep doing the same things.

“But our application let us down badly second half and we paid the price for standing off the Petershill guys and allowing them time on the ball.

“We know what needs to be worked on but that doesn’t make defeats like today any easier to accept.”

Not even Peasy diehards could deny their team - showing fully six changes from last weekend’s winning line-up -was second best in the opening exchanges.

And they had reason to be thankful for goalkeeper Mikey White advancing off his line to block Clydebank dangerman Jordan Shelvey when clean through on goal and the striker was again holding his head in his hands shortly afterwards when he got on the end of a cross only to fire the ball wide of target from close range.

The half ended with an acrobatic Shelvey scissors kick attempt carrying over the crossbar while frustration over the paucity of his side’s attacking ventures saw the normally passive McGladrigan become involved in an off the ball `handbags` altercation with Bankies stopper Calum Gow that ended with Glad earning the unwanted distinction of the day’s first yellow card.

Long-serving Peasy gaffer Willie Patterson said: "We knew how Clydebank were going to play but making a whole raft of changes had us looking out of sorts early days and we can probably count ourselves fortunate not to fall a goal behind before half-time.

“It was always going to take time for us to gel but a better balance and shape on the restart made a huge difference and not surprisingly the players got better as the game wore on and could and should have added further goals so I’m delighted with both the result and our overall display.”

McGladrigan took all of five second half minutes to give his typical riposte to tough tackling defenders when he pounced on a deflected through pass and raced away to cleverly wait wait on advancing goalkeeper Josh Lumsden going to ground before adroitly clipping the ball over him and into the empty net for 1-0.

Five minutes later came another blow for Clydebank as the lively Shelvey limped off with an ankle injury to be replaced by Peter McGill who almost made an immediate impact with a shot fizzed wide in his side’s next attacking sortie.

Just after the hour mark,Petershill doubled their advantage when a surge forward by full-back Wilson saw him go to ground after a challenge that whistle happy referee Xander Harrison adjudged to be illegal despite Bankies protests and the resulting free kick award was hammered home by the aforementioned Wilson for 2-0.

The fired-up McGladrigan’s clever headed lay-off set up a scoring chance for Peasy top scorer Jason Hardie whose scuffed off target shot was his last contribution before being replaced by Chris Hall whose introduction saw the pressure intensified on the visiting backline over the game’s closing stages.

However, some wasteful final passes and dogged defending from Gow and Jamie Darroch ensured the scoreline stayed as it was.

The highly competitive Darroch pulled no punches in his post- match observations. "We did everything Kieran and Marc asked off us for 45 minutes and they didn’t hold back in praising our efforts during their half time talk .

“So to then stop doing what they have been preaching and revert back to our old bad habits is nothing less than a total lack of respect and we need to have a good look at ourselves as a team and as individuals.”

Biggest shock among the other Central League Cup contests taking place was arguably the elimination of last season’s beaten finalists Greenock, beaten 3-0 at home by lower league Lanark United for whom young striker Ronan Kearney netted a brace of goals.

Seasoned frontman John Gemmell scored both goals for Cambuslang Rangers in a 2-0 victory over Wishaw and the same scoreline sufficed as Kevin Ross and Jamie Leslie counters saw Gartcairn get the better of Vale of Leven while Aaron Connolly and Chris Faulds were on target to help East Kilbride Thistle win 2-1 away to Maryhill.

Blantyre Vics beat St Anthony's on penalty kicks (7-6 ) following a 2-2 regulation time draw and Arthurlie also needed the shoot- out route (5-3) to overcome a battling Larkhall Thistle at Gasworks Park.

Hitman Graham Gracie put the Jags 1-0 ahead but Ryan Deas and Eddie McTernan scores had the Super Premier side ahead only for Josh Payne to level direct from a corner kick and bring about a 2-2 stalemate.
