Could it be that the final chapter in the story of this season’s Central First Division title race is on the verge of being finally written this coming Saturday?

One asks the question as a defining moment beckons for three teams, Cambuslang Rangers (54 points), Larkhall Thistle (54 points) and St Roch's (51 points, played one game less) all still in with an opportunity to embrace the glory that goes hand in hand with the mantle of champions as the finishing line nears.

The Wee Gers, are without a game yet undoubtedly sit best placed among the leading trio on the back of goals from Thomas Kilmartin, Jordan Morton, Dale Simeone and John Gemmell securing a penultimate game 4-0 weekend victory over Rossvale that ensures Paul McColl’s men cannot be bested if they come out on top in their final league game of the season away to Neilston.

But before then comes this Saturday’s crunch clash at Gasworks Park between Larkhall and the Candy Rock where all manner of twists are possible, however what is certain is a win for either side guarantees promotion for the Somervell Park outfit.

Team McColl insisted: “I'm not going to take the easy way out and sit on the fence because even though the two teams are very evenly matched, I don’t see the game finishing as a draw given the stakes on offer.

“It will be won by whosoever turns up on the day with the greater desire, hunger and determination and I have no preference other than a selfish viewpoint that sees a St Roch's victory meaning Cambuslang Rangers will be definitely promoted to play in the Super First Division next season.

“My players set out this season with that aim in mind and to be sitting where we are right now with our destiny in our own hands is both exciting and nerve-wracking.

“We will be playing for the title against Neilston regardless of what happens in Saturday’s game and I’d have quite honestly bitten your hand off if you’d offered me that scenario back in August.”

McColl admits to being in the dark as to when the concluding 90 minutes of his side’s league campaign will be played out.

He added: “The players were back to their best and in good spirits against Rossvale so I’d have been happy to go up against Neilston this week but most teams encounter a stop-start period at this stage of the Junior season.

“The nerves are fraying waiting for a date but at least the delay can work in our favour by allowing us to know exactly what is needed in our last game.

“Keeping the guys ticking over becomes the difficult part now and that’s why I’m pleased we have a Central League Cup tie against Yoker tomorrow night.”

Meanwhile, players and supporters of Darvel Juniors celebrated well into the night on Saturday after being crowned Ayrshire District League champions thanks to a 3-1 victory away to Maybole.

A scoring brace from Murray Johnston and a Calum Walsh counter ensured Paddy Clelland’s side got over the finishing line to clinch a first league title win in 50 years that was all the more memorable in light of Darvel having suffered a 6-1 thrashing in their first league game of the season at the hands of Whitletts Vics.
