THE prospect of a massive week in West Region circles is looming that could make or break the season for a number of leading clubs.

Were the right combination of results to occur – Glenafton can find themselves uncatchable atop the Super Premier Division pile – Clydebank could be the Super First kingpins – Cambuslang Rangers supporters 16-year wait for a league title triumph might finally be over – and the promotion dreams of East Kilbride Thistle may be realised.

Arguably looking the best bet to come good are 'The Lang' whose manager Paul McColl has issued a rallying call to his playing charges in the wake of Larkhall Thistle 2-1 weekend victory over St Roch's leaving his side needing three points from their final league fixture against Neilston to be crowned Central First Division champions.

Passionate gaffer McColl, currently serving a touchline ban that does not expire until October, admitted to staying well away from the Gasworks Park showdown that clinched promotion for his club.

He insisted: “I thought it far more important to head over to Keanie Park and run the rule over Neilston in their game against Johnstone Burgh but I certainly wasn’t short of telephone calls from people keeping me informed of what was happening in the Larkhall contest.

“Their coming out on top was the perfect result for us and I’d like to say a massive well done to Big Sinky and his players even though I have to own up to predicting a victory for St Roch's.

“But all the accounts I’ve heard reckon the better team won on the day so hopefully both of us can go on to give a good account of ourselves in the higher league next season.”

Cambuslang ran out 5-1 winners over Neilston in their first meeting of the season at Somervell Park, however McColl is convinced his players will be in for a tougher time of it through at Brig O’Lea.

He said: “Neilston are well organised and are not an easy team to play against particularly at home but I’m hoping the added motivation of having just 90 minutes standing between us and the league title will act in our favour.

“There’s certainly no chance of anyone in our playing squad taking anything for granted not least because I’ll be keeping everyone on their toes by not naming our line-up until we get to Neilston.

“And you can take it as read that I’ll be putting out our strongest possible line-up and hoping to come up with the right mix of experience and legs to get the job done.”

McColl was not for revealing his selection hand, however the absence of experienced campaigner Roberto Halliday through suspension could see former Rob Roy and Glenafton midfielder Jamie Hay earn a starting jersey.

The team boss added: “Our attacking strengths this season have put us where we are in the table and if anything we are even better off since the signing of John Gemmell who has weighed in with a number of goals since coming on board.

“And I cannot fail to mention the contribution of Dale Simeone (26 goals) who has been a revelation in his first Junior season while Thomas Kilmartin (16) and Liam Gormley (22) have not been shy when it comes to finding the net.

“I count myself very fortunate to have all these scoring riches to call on and hopefully they have kept a few goals for a last hurrah.”

Also on this weekend’s fixture card is the inaugural game in this season’s Evening Times Champions Cup which sees Keppoch Park hosting the clash of Central Second Division champions Glasgow Perthshire against the Ayrshire District League’s finest Darvel in a preliminary round tie.

Home advantage against Cambuslang/Larkhall is the reward for the winners while the other half of the draw has the Super Premier Division winners awaiting the visit of the Super First Division kingpins.
