BRYAN YOUNG has vowed to roll up the sleeves to ensure he is part of Tony McInally’s Pollok revolution this season.

The five times Scottish Junior Cup winner’s move to the Glasgow Southside giants from Auchinleck Talbot ranks as arguably the biggest Junior transfer story of the summer months, however Youngy has always known the competition for jerseys would be fierce.

And that feeling was only reinforced on Saturday when he made his maiden Newlandsfield appearance in the 4-2 pre-season friendly win over Cumbernauld United.

The classy midfield playmaker said: “I’d be lying to say it didn’t feel odd running out as a Pollok player after fully 11 seasons with Talbot but the feeling didn’t last long and I thoroughly enjoyed everything about the game.

“It had been even stranger walking into the dressing room for our first night’s training but the established players were brilliant in making me a part of things and I'm already settled at the club and looking forward to the coming season.

“Our supporters were very welcoming to myself and the other new signings on show and we responded with some good goals and decent passages of play in what I would describe as a good platform from where improvements can be made.

The strikers Stefan McCluskey and Adam Forde were lively but they like all of us were put in the shade by the display of the young lad Senna from the Pollok under 19’s who is only 17 years of age yet didn’t look out of place among so many established Juniors.

“He looks an outstanding prospect and I cannot help but think Junior football will be no more than a stepping stone for him to the Senior game.”

Young featured in an unaccustomed wide right position in a 3-5-2 formation against Cumbernauld that is not expected to be his regular Newlandsfield role, however the 30-year-old insists he will play wherever he’s asked.

“A number of players were posted missing through holidays which possibly forced Stewart Ralston into deploying me down the right flank but I’ll play wherever he and Tony think I can do a job for the team.” said the Paisley-based ace.

“Just getting a jersey is a major plus because there are so many top players here looking to catch the eye and it’s still early days with the management looking to try out different pairings and formations in the friendly games.

“You only have to glance round our dressing room to realise it’s not going to be easy holding down a regular place here but each and every player signed on like myself is fully aware of the quality of players Tony intended bringing to Pollok and the challenge facing all of us now is to be at the top of our game and give the manager a headache.”

Next up for Pollok is a friendly joust at home to city rivals Petershill tomorrow night and Young is hoping he can earn a starting place.

He revealed: “A handful of players are due back from holiday and the manager may think they need some match practice but I’m hoping to get another workout to keep myself ticking along.

“I will forever look back with fondness on my time at Auchinleck but coming to Pollok has been the right move for me at the right time in my playing career and I feel re-energised with plenty of gas in the tank for what lies ahead.”

Meanwhile, confirmed as the latest close season arrival at Newlandsfield is Young’s former Talbot team-mate Martin McGoldrick whose departure has coincided with Tommy Sloan snapping up his former striker Sean McElroy as well as former Stranraer and Kilwinning Rangers winger Calvin Kemp.

In friendly games played last night, Maryhill ran out 4-2 winners over Vale of Clyde with goals from Andy McEwan (3) and Ciaron Smith, while down in Ayrshire Murray Johnston, Adam Wales and Greg Vernon counted as Darvel’s impressive pre-season form continued with a 3-0 defeat of Stranraer Under 20’s.
