ST ROCH'S manager Andy Cameron wants his side's promotion into the Stagecoach Central First Division to act as a catalyst for a turnaround in the famous old Glasgow club's fortunes.

A 2-2 draw against Royal Albert enabled the Candy Rock to seal their step up, but fledgling Junior gaffer Cameron wants more success, and is now urging his players to target a Euroscot Eng Central League Cup semi-final berth.

Thorniewood United provide the last-eight hurdle to achieving that particular dream, however Cameron reckons his Garngad troops could get the better of their higher-league opponents when they meet at Robertson Park tomorrow night.

He said: "Everyone connected with the club had an enjoyable time when our two supporters' buses returned to the James McGrory Stadium on Saturday for a promotion party.

"But I was only too aware that the next big challenge was already looming, and I'm keen for our players to give a good account of ourselves in what is shaping up as a real test against Thorniewood.

"On a personal level, their manager Andy Frame is an old adversary of mine from our times in the amateur ranks, and it will be good to pit my wits against his again, even though it only makes for a tougher 90 minutes that he and his players will be out to avenge our 2-1 Sectional League Cup win earlier this season."

It might seem strange that Cameron has targeted a semi-final place, but he revealed: "You would have to say it's as far as we are likely to progress given that the winners of our game are on a collision course with whoever comes out on top between arguably the two favourites for the cup itself - Cumbernauld United and Petershill."

His desire to bring better times to the club has brought Cameron to make numerous changes throughout the season, yet even his harshest critics would admit that, almost without exception, they have paid off in light of the Candy taking the final promotion place despite having accumulated only 11 points from their opening 12 league matches.

Instilling a high work ethic has acted to make his players difficult to beat, yet the quest to re-establish St Roch's as one of Glasgow's prominent Junior sides is certain to mean further changes in the not too distant future.

He insisted: "People at the club tell me that St Roch's have won promotion three or four times in the past 20 years, but have always gone straight back down again, so our aim is to make sure that doesn't happen this time around.

"That is not an easy ask when you consider we are going into a higher league containing bigger clubs and better players, and I think it's inevitable we will look to beef up our squad over the summer.

"We have our sights trained on a number of prospective signings, but whether we can rein them in is another thing because First Division level means competing with clubs paying out wages and, in that respect, we are seriously disadvantaged."

Cumbernauld recently beat Petershill 3-0 in the New Coin Holdings Cup, however hopes of a repeat upset are not helped by the continuing absence of dominant centre-back Danny Boyle, who is sidelined for the next four-six weeks with a broken toe.

Elsewhere, the closing date for applications for the vacant Cambuslang Rangers manager's job has been reached, and thought to be in the running is ex-Petershill and Arthurlie centre-back Ryan Jordan.
