POLLOK boss Tony McInally gave his players the hairdryer treatment at the break as they struggled against an impressive Irvine Vics side on Saturday.

And his half-time blast worked a treat as Lok turned on the heat to record their first home win in the Super League First Division.

Vics, the Ayrshire District League champs, had started well at Newlandsfield, defending resolutely and breaking forward with pace and skill.

But John Sweeney and Kevin Bradley scored to put Pollok on course for victory.

And they didn't falter when skipper Jamie Darroch was sent off eight minutes from time for conceding a penalty that Kevin Adam netted.

After his side's 2-1 win, Lok manager McInally admitted: "We didn't start well and were fortunate to go in level at the break. I gave the guys a real rollicking for only showing in flashes that they have the makings of a good team.

"Thankfully there was an all-round improvement in the second half and that made the difference. Davie Winters in particular was outstanding."

Vics had been rated as 7/1 underdogs but defied the odds by taking the game to Pollok from the first whistle.

Their enterprise looked to have been rewarded after 15 minutes when Adam went down inside the box under a Paul Gallagher challenge.

But the burly striker's well-struck spot-kick was superbly saved by diving Lok keeper Ross Harkness.

Clear chances were missed in the first half by Adam, Calum Davidson and Rikky Allan for Vics plus Pollok's Winters and Alan McKenzie.

The deadlock was broken on the hour when a Winters cross broke to Sweeney, whose shot came back off the post and hit Vics full-back Darren Russell before crossing the line.

Five minutes later Pollok doubled their lead. Winters played in Bradley, who coolly shot beyond Chris Lamb.

Vics hit back when Adam pounced on Sweeney's short passback before being brought down in the box by Darroch.

That brought a red card for the Lok skipper before the Vics striker fired home from the spot. But Pollok saw out the closing eight minutes.

Vics management pair Ian McMillan and Stevie Wilson said: "To come here minus five regulars and play as we did is very encouraging. But terrific performances won't keep us in this division. We need to start putting points on the board."

Apart from Lok, Rutherglen Glencairn are the only other Super First Division side with a 100 per cent record.

Goals from Steven McLung and Jamie Gilmartin gave them a 2-1 home win over Kilsyth Rangers, whose goal was a late Mark Duffy penalty.

ROB ROY were trailing 2-0 to David Dunn and John Paul McBride goals for Thorniewood until a storming finale saw Scott Upton and Dominic O'Halloran score to earn the Rabs a point.

Neilston secured a 1-1 draw at Maybole and the same scoreline was repeated at Greenfield Park, where Largs Thistle's 18-year-old Nikky Jamieson netted in 81 minutes to cancel out Chrissy McCormick's opener for Shettleston.

Greenock upset the odds to win 2-0 at Yoker but biggest upset of the day was at Ardeer Stadium, where goals from Arnault Benbow and Ross Stewart gave Ardeer Thistle a 2-0 win over Cumbernauld.

In the Super Premier, the Ayrshire trio of Auchinleck Talbot, Irvine Meadow and Hurlford United lead the way with two wins out of two.

Colin Spence and David Gormley goals gave Talbot a 2-0 win at Shotts and a Chris Hall hat-trick helped Medda trounce Troon 5-0.

Mark Sideserf and Mark Staunton were also on the mark while the visitors had Jonathan Baillie sent off.

Hurlford had to come from behind at Glenafton after a Michael Wardrope goal. The home side had Craig McEwan sent off before second-half goals from Ross Robertson, Neil McGregor and Paul Cameron gave Ford a 3-1 win.

Liam Finnigan notched the only goal as Petershill won at Kilbirnie Ladeside while Cumnock and Clydebank played out a 0-0 stalemate.

Beith had a Darren Christie hat-trick and Kenny McLean strike to thank for a 4-2 win over Arthurlie, whose goals were netted by Gary Smith.
