Jamie Docherty is hoping that he and his St Anthony's team-mates can seize their second chance to get past Ardrossan Winton Rovers in the Junior Cup.

The prospect of a first-round replay at Winton Park against the Ayrshire side is daunting but hardly one to turn the Ants players' legs to jelly after their heroics in Saturday's thrilling game at McKenna Park.

The famous old Govan club came storming back from 2-1 down with only 10 men to lead 3-2 in the closing stages.

Their hopes of a memorable victory were dashed when veteran hitman Ian Cashmore netted his second goal of the game to secure a 3-3 draw.

Doc, who scored the Ants' opener, admitted: "Part of me thinks we should have been able to see the game out at 3-2.

"But you have to give credit to Ardrossan for using their extra man to such good effect and putting us under really intense pressure late on.

"If truth be told, we were pretty fortunate to survive a number of near things after they got back on level terms.

"So in many respects it was pleasing to still be in the tie.

"No doubt their players will fancy their chances of finishing us off at the second time of asking but our dressing room is of the same mind.

"If we can learn our lessons from the first game - keeping 11 men on the pitch is a must - then we have a great chance to get into the second round."

The 28-year-old forward is keen to enjoy an extended cup run in his tenth Scottish campaign in a career that has seen him sign three times for Ants and enjoy stints with Renfrew, Pollok, Arthurlie and Rutherglen Glencairn.

He recalled: "I've been with two clubs that have made it to the semi-finals - Rob Roy in 2009 and Glens in the season before last, though I'd been cup-tied before joining them.

"It would be marvellous if St Anthony's could enjoy similar success but they'd need Lady Luck to be smiling a lot.

"As a group of players we need to concentrate on taking one game at a time, starting at Ardrossan on Saturday."

Doc singled out midfielder John Johnston as a threat to Ants due to his ability to carve out openings for the Rovers striking duo of Cashmore and Ryan Caddis.

He said: "On his game JJ is one of the best playmakers in the game. You can't afford to give him time and space or he will run the show."

Doc could partner Willie Duncan or Billy Stevenson at Ardrossan. But Ants manager Jamesie McKenna hasn't ruled out a start for on-loan Petershill frontman Chris Mackie.

The long-serving boss said: "Chris did not play in the first game because Petershill did not want him cup-tied.

"But they are out of the cup after losing to Hermes, so we'll now have to ask if he can play for us in Saturday's replay.

"That would be a terrific boost for us ahead of taking on a very experienced side with a handful of quality players."

ARDROSSAN boss Chris Strain insists his players will be concentrating on their own game rather than fretting over how to put the hems on Mackie, if he plays.

He said: "There wasn't a lot to choose between the teams in the first game but two bad mistakes left us trailing and looking on the way out.

"The guys didn't panic and created openings. Eventually Cashy stuck one away to earn us another bite of the cherry.

"Cutting out stupid errors is a necessity if we want to progress in the competition."

In other first-round replays, Wishaw are rated outright underdogs for their trip to Sauchie while Clydebank are overwhelming favourites to beat North Region's Colony Park at Holm Park after a 0-0 draw in Inverurie.

But Bankies boss Budgie McGhie warned: "The same bookies had us at 1/16 on to beat Colony in the first game, so who is to say they haven't got it wrong again?

"We will need to play a lot better than last week. We also need to find a killer touch in front of goal because missed chances are becoming the story of our season."
