Budgie McGhie is refusing to rule out Clydebank's chances of bettering their silverware haul from last season.

An entertaining Bankies side came good on two fronts by lifting both Euroscot Eng sponsored trophies - a memorable Sectional League Cup victory over Pollok followed by a League Cup triumph against Cumbernauld United.

What was always going to be a hard act was made even tougher by Queen's Park manager Gus MacPherson's triple summer swoop to lure away the highly-rated Ross McPherson, Ciaron McElroy and Vinnie Berry.

However, long-serving gaffer Budgie remains upbeat and insists his revamped dressing room can cope with the loss of three of their star turns.

He said: "Losing players of that quality left us with a massive hole to fill and I'm not going to pretend otherwise, but we are very relaxed about our squad.

"There might be a need to tweak the shape of our team, but I'd like to think Clydebank will continue to be one of the most forward-going sides around.

"Wholesale changes were never on our agenda and, to date, we have only four newcomers, and one of them - Jordan Shelvey - was signed from the amateur ranks in time to make a substitute appearance in our defeat of Cumberrnauld .

"Our supporters have already warmed to his attack-minded ways and I'm pretty sure they will also appreciate the combative and energetic style of Graham Mort who has just come on board from Renfrew and has looked very impressive in training.

"Andy Irvine is an old-fashioned ball-winning centre-back and, at the weekend, we also fixed up Graeme Ramage, who is a 21-year-old midfielder with an eye for goal whose abilities have previously earned him stints with St Mirren, Dumbarton and Annan Athletic, as well as an all-too-brief spell with Arthurlie.

"Injuries have curtailed his Senior career and his dropping into the Junior ranks to get back his match fitness is an arrangement that could profit both him and Clydebank. Graeme has the attitude and ability to handle anything coming his way and we are excited about what he brings to the team.

"To improve on last time out is a huge ask ,but it's far from an impossible one."

Elsewhere, it can be heard on the grapevine that Super Premier newcomers Troon have completed the signing of former Auchinleck Talbot midfielder Kieron Patterson from Hurlford United, while highly-rated Kilwinning Rangers prospect Sturat Hannah has joined Irvine Vics.

Port Glasgow have snapped up stopper Ross Kearns from near neighbours Greenock and, hard on the heels of Rutherglen Glencairn goalkeeper Johnny Duncan moving to St Anthony's, comes word that the Glens may also lose striker Mark McCarry, who is in signing talks with Bellshill Athletic.

West Region beaks making the first round draw for the New Coin Holdings West of Scotland Cup at their recent AGM must surely have breathed a huge sigh of relief after the pairings pulled from the hat avoided a clash of venues for potentially 14 ground-sharing clubs.

Clydebank, for instance, landed an away tie against Craigmark Burntonians while Yoker are at home to Bellshill Athletic, whose own landlord, Vale of Clyde, are similarly on the road to meet St Anthony's.

Similar contrasting fortunes were shared by Neilston/ Benburb, Johnstone Burgh/ Renfrew, Petershill/Rossvale, Cumbernauld Utd/Rob Roy and Greenock/Port Glasgow.

Cup holders Talbot start their defence of the trophy with a home clash against arch-rivals Cumnock, while we will also see Irvine Vics and Blantyre Vics go head-to-head.
