Irvine Meadow'S dreams of Scottish Junior Cup glory remain on track thanks to hero goalkeeper Steven Hall in their 1-0 quarter- final win over Bo'ness.

The Medda No.1 broke East Region hearts with three stunning second-half saves - one from a Darren Gribben spot kick - as the Ayrshire cracks repelled an onslaught from the bookmakers' favourites to clinch a semi-final double header against Super Premier rivals Hurlford United.

Hall had been a virtual spectator during a first half bossed by his side.

But he more than earned his corn after the break starting with a spectacular 47th-minute tip-over save from a well struck Gribben free-kick.

Routine saves to deny Paul Murphy and substitute Kieran Anderson efforts followed before Hall was put on the spot after a Mark Staunton challenge felled Sloan to earn Bo'ness a penalty kick.

Gribben stepped forward confidently and hit the ball firmly, however the diving Hall firstly stuck out a leg to block his shot before springing to his feet to superbly touch Will Snowdon's follow-up effort round the post to safety.

His double-save stunned the visitors who remained in the ascendancy, particularly after Shaun Fraser was sent off, however Hall's goal stayed mainly untroubled over the closing stages.

He said: "I was only doing my job but managing a shut-out in a game this important is a real feather in the cap of our goalkeeping coach Billy Kerr.

"Everyone of the team has done their bit to get us into the semi-finals and I just hope we can take that extra step forward."

Dismissed sinner Fraser had been a match-winning saint when Medda netted the only goal of the game in 24 minutes.

Taking possession in midfield he wheeled past two opponents and set off goalwards before slipping a sublime pass into the path of winger Gary McCann who crossed for Darren Miller to bundle home.

Beaming gaffer Stevie Rankin said afterwards: "Peat made a great save early in the game from Darren and I was concerned that we might regret missing those chances.

"But thankfully Steven was in unbeatable form on the day.

"Our goal was all about Shaun's marvellous piece of skill so he can consider himself let off the hook for his sending off."

Whitletts Vics failed to make it an all-Ayrshire semi-final up after they were on the wrong end of a 7-0 mauling in their last-eight clash away to East Region big guns Camelon.

Theyt were put under pressure from the kick off by the powerful home side who made the breakthrough with a Blair Bachelor goal in 20 minutes and duly ended the game as a contest before half-time through further goals from a Kevin Kelbie brace and Elliot Duffy own goal.

Prolific marksman Kelbie helped himself to another couple after the interval and he also set up substitute Craig Young to complete the scoring.

In the Super Premier Division, former Ayr United signing Ross Robertson netted the only goal of the game as Hurlford got the better of Clydebank and Pollok salvaged another point in their battle against the drop through a hard-fought 1-1 draw down at Cumnock.

Jamie Barclay rifled home a low shot to give the visitors a half-time lead, but Lok debutant Adam Strachan had the misfortune to deflect in a Ray Montgomery shot to level the scores.

In the New Coin Holdings West of Scotland Cup contests, Kilbirnie came from behind to beat Arthurlie 2-1 at Dunterlie through Michael Moore and Chris Hamilton goals while Graham Wilson , Bryan Young and David Gormley were on target as Auchinleck Talbot beat Rob Roy 3-0.

A Sean McKenna spot kick saw Shotts Bon Accord win 1-0 away to Neilston, while Petershill crashed out on penalties against Cumbernauld.
