Lanark United 's fourth from bottom position in the Central First Division basement belies the fact only three other teams have scored more goals than the Yowes.

But this ability to tuck away chances is not altogether surprising when you consider the Moor Park team boss is none other than Scottish goalscoring legend John Brogan who was on the scoresheet close to 300 times during a memorable Senior career (most notably a seven-year stint with St Johnstone) that began when he stepped up to Albion Rovers in 1972 from the now defunct Blantyre Celtic.

He came into Junior management with Armadale Thistle in 1996 and the following 19 years has seen him taste success with Blantyre Vics, East Kilbride Thistle and Yoker Athletic prior to moving to Lanark earlier this season.

Asking him , No 2 Jimmy Kerr and coach Stephen Brogan to come up with a Junior dream team evoked the reply "Well we are going to be spoilt for choice so I'd better apologise now to players we have missed out."

Goalkeeper:- A wearer of the No 1 jersey proved no problem for Brogey who did not hesitate in picking former Scotland Juniors internationalist Ian Wilson who made his Junior debut at Blantyre Vics .

He recalled , " We already had a terrific goalkeeper at the Vics in Peter McFarlane but Ian's shotstopping, handling skills and great kicking ability saw him come to the fore and nobody can deny he turned out to be every bit the top keeper we thought he would be .

"That said his development owed a lot to Peter whose attitude was second to none in helping bring on the young protégé."

Defenders:- Jimmy wanted a defensive place found for current Stranraer ace Barry Russell who played under him at East Kilbride Thistle however Brogey could not see past two further back in time Jags full backs in Gary Shearer and Ian Penman .

He reasoned , "E.K beat Bellshill Athletic 2-0 in the 2003 Sectional League Cup Final thanks in no small part to those two snuffing out the danger of Brian Dingwall and Paul McGrillen .

"I'm willing to bet not many Junior defenders past or present can claim that on their c.v."

Brogey's beginnings at Blantyre Celtic brought him to consider finding a place for uncompromising centrebacks Jackie Rogers and Billy Brownlie but when push came to shove he could not overlook erstwhile E.K. class acts Colin Mitchell and Robert McKinnon.

He insisted ,"Mitch and Rab are better known as Seniors but they certainly didn't sully their reputations after dropping down to Junior level.

"Both were great on the ball, cool under pressure and fierce competitors when it mattered but where they really stood out was in making precious few blunders that cost us goals ."

Midfielders: Jimmy favoured current Queens Park midfielder Paul Woods for a wide right berth and Brogey reminisced over erstwhile Blantyre Celtic team mate Harry Hunter and one time Vics winger Neil Caldwell before plumping for current Shotts Bon Accord assistant boss John Gibson of whom he said.

"Gibby had short playing stints with Auchinleck and Bellshill however if he retained the same vision , drive and ability to chip in with the odd goal that he showed under me at Stirling Albion then he would be one of the first names down on my team sheet."

The names of Paul Duddy (Blantyre Vics) and Greg Maitland (Yoker ) were considered for the left flank beat but Brogey believed the bravery and dazzling runs of Blantyre Celtic great Willie McGranaghan tipped the scales in his favour.

He said , "Willie took on arguably the hardest job ever in Junior football in replacing Jimmy Johnstone at Craighead Park but he made a real fist of it and served up some truly outstanding displays despite the ferocious tackling that was considered acceptable in those days ."

Harry McLachlan, a Brogan discovery at Holm Park was a strong contender for a midfield dynamo berth as was former E.K. skipper , Ryan Kelly but the nod went to former Partick Thistle great Bobby Law whose coupling with Brian Welsh at Blantyre Vics was instrumental to the successes enjoyed by Brogey and co-bossMartin Clark.

The 60 year old insisted , "Their unforgiving style , phenomenal fitness levels and sheer craft dragged the Vics through games and they complimented each other to perfection."

Forwards:- As to be expected , Brogey is very demanding over what he looks for in front men and his coaching helped spawn prolific goalscorers Martin McVake (East Kilbride ) and Graham Higgins (Blantyre Vics) .

He recalled , "Graham netted a lot of crucial goals while Martin was a real talent with pace to burn however with a bit more application I'm sure both guys could have done better in the game .

"That said , the forward line combination I'm going for is the Yoker duo of Michael Rogers and Gary Arbuckle who have so much potential .

"Michael is a willing worker and terrific finisher while Gary is simply top drawer in terms of movement and eye for a goal so nobody should be writing off Yoker's chances of Scottish Junior Cup success with strikers of their ability to call on."

The Lanark United backroom team's knowledge of players is far reaching and Brogey is delighted to pen a Dream Team X1 of Wilson, Shearer , Mitchell , McKinnon , Penman , Gibson , Law, Welsh , McGranaghan, Rodgers , Arbuckle. Substitutes. Brownlie, McLachlan, McVake, Higgins , McFarlane(GK).
