Auchinleck Talbot's tried-and-tested stars will not be harbouring an inferiority complex ahead of their William Hill Scottish Cup replay against Stranraer at Beechwood Park.

Defensive cornerstone Martin McGoldrick and his team-mates were gutted last weekend when their senior opponents grabbed a dramatic injury-time equaliser from former Kilbirnie Ladeside front-man Jamie Longworth.

But the agony of missing out on a notable cup scalp has fired up McGoldrick and he is determined to get revenge when the two teams lock horns at the second time of asking on Saturday.

And added motivation - not that it was ever needed - arrived with the fourth-round draw landing the victors with the prize of a trip to Clyde later this month.

The 26-year-old said: "Losing a goal in the dying seconds meant our dressing room was a mix of anger and disappointment.

"We had the tie won and all but threw it away. But we cannot dwell on what might have been because the most important thing now is how we bounce back.

"Stranraer celebrated as if they had won the cup itself and, human nature being what it is, might have their players thinking they have the impetus going into the second game. But I'll bet that feeling won't last for long once they run out at Beechwood and hear the roar of our supporters.

"No doubt bookmakers will again make them outright favourites but we are desperate to make our mark on this competition and if we can start well and get our fans behind us then anything can happen."

The former Harmony Row and Maryhill protégé avoided questions on the likelihood of a next-up clash with Clyde.

He said: "All our focus is on Stranraer and only if things go our way on Saturday will anyone at this club talk about the fourth round.

" There was talk of us being out of our depth at Stair Park but that wasn't the case.

"The surprise element is away, and Stranraer know what we are about, but the same applies to them and we hope to put the lessons learned to good use."

Stranraer's star man last week was midfielder Andy Stirling, who trained at Talbot without being offered terms, however Longworth deserves a mention after endorsing his hitman reputation with both his side's goals in the 2-2 draw .

He said: "My scoring record against Auchinleck is fairly decent but that will count for nothing come Saturday.

"Their energy and commitment was an eye-opener for a few of our guys but Talbot were just as I remembered - in your face from first whistle to last - and it's easy to see why they are rated the top side at their level.

"Martin McGoldrick, Colin Spence, Stephen White and Keir Millican in particular caught the eye and we are in no doubts another tough game is in prospect. But it gives us confidence to know we survived the first game despite playing with 10 men for the closing half-hour.

"We know what to expect now so there can be no excuses if we come up short."

Talbot gaffer Tommy Sloan is urging his players to be more ruthless.

He said: "To be 2-1 up against 10 men was a nice position to be in and we just needed a bit of self-belief to see the game out.

"But the effort and mental toughness shown by every player makes it hard to be critical and I'll be delighted to get more of the same attitude.

"Other than long-term injured Graham Wilson, everyone is fit so we are ready."
