Beith striker Kenny McLean hit out at his side's Jekyll-and-Hyde nature after the Ayrshiremen were held to a 3-3 draw at home to Pollok.

The 29-year-old forward, so often a thorn in the flesh of 'Lok, was at his jet-paced best as he spearheaded the Mighty's many attacks in a superb first-half display that gave them a fully deserved 3-0 interval lead.

But his sparkle was severely diminished and he cut a disconsolate figure looking on as Pollok came roaring back to totally dominate the second half.

The strike ace said: "But for their goalkeeper, we could easily have been five or six goals to the good going in at half time.

"But you'd have thought it was a different set of Beith players who came back out because we stopped playing through our midfield and reverted to sitting deep and lumping high balls forward .

"Pollok, to their credit, were much improved, with their front players particularly sharp, so they will do well this season. But not many teams will make it as easy for them as we did."

McLean opened the scoring after 12 minutes when he pounced on a loose ball from a corner to ram a low shot past Lok No 1 Jordan Longmuir.

Minutes later Longmuir denied the hitman another, touching a shot around the post, but from the corner Beith went 2-0 up. Marc McShane got the header, Longmuir blocked but Andy Reid turned in the loose ball .

The home side extended their lead after David McGowan capitalised on a surging Joe Bradley run, but Lok made the best possible restart when a through pass found Davie Winters and he rounded Adam Strain to net.

The introduction of Tam Hanlon had beefed up a flimsy midfield and sustained pressure paid dividends as Jamie Darroch headed in from a corner kick to further cut Beith's advantage.

But it took the introduction of Lok's Ryan McBeth as a substitute to level the scores. Seconds after he came on, Winters found him with a neat pass and he lobbed the ball over Strain and into the unguarded net.

The youngster came close to snatching a winning goal when a last-minute 20-yard shot cleared Strain's crossbar by inches.

Lok gaffer Tony McInally admitted: " We were an odd mix today with great attacking and sloppy defending, particularly in the first half when Beith bossed us all over the pitch. We could well have been 2-0 up before they scored and though Jordan made some decent saves I felt that 3-0 flattered them at the interval. I always felt confident.

"Our levels of fitness stood the test and overall I'm very happy to come away with a draw."

Clydebank's unbeaten pre-season record almost came unstuck in a 3-3 Greenfield Park draw against impressive early starters Shettleston.

Three times the Bankies led through Stevie Gardiner and a Jordan Shelvey brace, only to be pegged back by a Gary Millar double and a Kyle Robertson counter. Home side manager Hugh Kelly bemoaned a late offside ruling denying a second for Robertson.

Braces from Darren Simpson and Jordan Logan along with a Kieron Martin goal helped St Rochs to a 5-2 victory away to Livingston United while Rob Roy were also triumphant after overcoming Broxburn Athletic 2-0 through Jordan McKechnie and Chris Duff strikes.

Petershill lost 2-0 at Newtongrange Star and Yoker went down 3-2 at Tayport.

But Larkhall Thistle gained a 2-2 draw against Kinnoul and the same scoreline sufficed for St Anthony's at Oakley.

In Ayrshire, Maryhill came back from a goal down to earn a 1-1 draw against Glenafton and Auchinleck Talbot returned to winning ways, a David Gormley double sealing a 2-0 success over Penicuick Athletic. Irvine Meadow suffered a surprise 1-0 loss at home to Dundee Downfield .

There were mixed fortunes for the combatants in tonight's Clydesdale Cup Final with Lesmahagow losing 4-2 away to Cumnock while Forth Wanderers had Barry Canning and Chris Lennon on target in a 2-1 defeat of Edinburgh United.
