CAMBUSLANG Rangers have named former player Paul McColl as their new manager.

The 46-year-old - who had been Cumnock No.2 under John McKeown - had emerged as the front-runner to replace John Doyle, and he will attempt to bring back the good times to a fallen Junior giant.

He has wasted little time in beginning the task of putting things into place on and off the pitch by installing one-time Thorniewood United manager Willie Dobbins as his assistant, while ongoing talks aimed at bringing in another experienced coach are set to be concluded this week.

And McColl, who played with Royal Albert, East Kilbride Thistle and Annbank United among others, admitted he was relishing the prospect of taking up his new role.

He said: "I only took part in around 10 games as a Cambuslang player, however I also served as a coach when Alan Wardlaw was in charge, so nobody needs to tell me about the club's traditions and history.

"I left because I had a hankering to still play the game, and I dropped down into the amateurs with Blantyre Rangers before getting in tow as a coach with John at Wishaw, where we made a decent fist of putting them back on the Junior map.

"He was always going to be on the radar of bigger clubs and the opportunity to join one of his former clubs, Cumnock, was a dream opportunity even if the shine was taken off by our failure to avoid relegation.

"The easy decision to make was to stick around at Townhead Park because I'm pretty certain John will get them back up at the first time of asking, however he knows I just couldn't resist the chance to take over at Cambuslang, so I applied for the job with his blessing.

"We remain good friends and hopefully a friendly between our clubs can be accommodated by our pre-season schedules."

McColl is in the dark over the vast majority of Cambuslang's 20-strong squad, but he has been doing his homework through club officials and his vast array of Junior contacts.

He added: "Guys such as Paul Burns and Paddy Cullen are known to me, but most of the squad are younger guys, so I've had information on individual strengths and weaknesses from more than one source.

"My worry is many are on one-year contracts and will move on before I get the chance to work with them, but if that turns out the case then I have targeted a number of potential signings to bring on board.

"It will take time to gel if there are a lot of dressing room changes, but our aim is to get Cambuslang Rangers out of the Second Division, so having a settled team for the league games getting underway is all that matters.

"Promotion will be far from easy as the contest went right to the wire this season with Glasgow Perthshire missing out in their last game, and I reckon things will be every bit as tight to call next time round.

"The Shire will be in the running again and relegated Ashfield may have considerable resources at their disposal as, indeed, will Gartcairn, if they are voted in when their application to join the Juniors comes up for approval next month."

Meanwhile, Rossvale are holding a charity fund-raiser in aid of Cancer Research this Sunday at the Allan Glen's Rugby Club in Bishopbriggs (2pm).

Gerry Britton will take charge of a Partick Thistle XI against a Tam McManus XI, while an adult seven-a-side tournament starting at midday precedes the main event.
