POLLOK are reputedly set to seal the sensational capture of former Aberdeen, Dundee United and Scotland striker Robbie Winters before tonight's Junior transfer deadline.

The Evening Times learned that the 41-year-old's outstanding display for current club Rossvale Juniors in Saturday's 2-0 Euroscot Eng Central League Cup defeat by the Southsiders - he was reputedly the best striker afield - prompted Lok boss Tony McInally into making an audacious signing approach to Rossvale counterpart Martin Lauchlan once the final whistle had sounded.

The outcome of their protracted talks is thought to be a considerable donation to the Bishopbriggs club's coffers while top-scoring hitman Robbie is delighted to be moving across city to form an attacking spearhead alongside his younger brother David and the only other recognised frontman on Pollok's books Alan McKenzie.

And the Winters brothers will now fulfil a long held aim to play alongside each other which had looked on the cards earlier this season when Robbie actually trained at Newlandsfield and figured in a couple of friendly outings.

But no signing offer was tabled and he did not hesitate to join Rossvale in the Central Second Division where his inspirational displays and eye for a goal have been instrumental in the relative Junior new boys finishing as title winners.

Pollok's status as Super First Division champions elect raises the possibility of the two clubs meeting in the Evening Times Champions Cup this season, however it's believed Lauchlan and McInally came to a gentleman's agreement that Winters would not feature against his former team-mates.

It's reputed Robbie had dropped strong hints he was going to call time on his chequered playing career at the end of this season.

So his departing Rossvale (only two confirmed fixtures yet to play) and going to Pollok (a minimum of 12 games remaining) is set to extend his playing time in the short term and there is reason to believe the lure of playing with Pollok in the Super Premier Division next term will cause him to reverse his hanging up the boots decision.

Meanwhile, Glasgow Perthshire remain in prime position to clinch the remaining Second Division promotion place with Cambuslang Rangers hot on their heels.

However, it must be a source of growing concern for Shire boss Billy Adams and Wee Gers co-gaffers John Doyle and Paddy Flannery to have a fired-up St Roch's side coming up on the rails on the back of an impressive five-game winning run during which they have bested all the leading promotion contenders.

Candy Rock boss Andy Cameron stopped short of saying his players will definitely overtake their step-up rivals, however he could not prevent himself effusing over his young side's superb winning ways.

He insisted: "The manner in which these lads have battled for the club and for each other fills me with immense pride and I would love to see some tangible reward for their efforts even though it's probably going to take a whole sequence of results going our way.

"John "German" Mullen in goal is proving to be our lucky charm as well as a superb shotstopper as he has yet to be on a losing side since joining us on loan from Cumnock.

"He came on board at roughly the same time as big frontman Baboucarr Mussa who netted what proved to be our winning goal against St Anthony's at the weekend and has helped provide the team with a physical presence in the forward going areas.

"He arrived from Third Lanark Amateurs and is still a bit raw around the edges but that's only to be expected from an 18-year-old stepping into the Junior ranks and I truly believe he can have a big future in the game if he applies himself properly.

"Mind you I feel the same about every player and our confidence in the guys has led to us signing them all up for next season because this squad ...along with a few key additions ... will have it in them to gain promotion next time ... assuming of course we don't go up this season."

St Roch's await the visit of bottom markers Newmains United to the James McGrory Stadium this coming Saturday and Cameron is warning his playing charges to expect a tough contest for the points.

He revealed: "People at the club tell me Newmains have been something of a bogey team as we have failed to beat them in several head to heads and I recall we drew 2-2 at their pitch in a game we should have won.

"We are the form side going into the return encounter, but that will count for nothing unless our lads have the bit between their teeth and want it more than Newmains who are sure to be highly motivated by their new management team of John Fallon, Johnny Hart and Tommy Dougan who are all ex-Candy Rock men."

Another crunch clash has Cambuslang hosting the visit of Johnstone Burgh while the Shire head into the Lanarkshire nether regions to face Forth Wanderers.
