Cumbernauld United boss John Queen had to laugh when reading in the Evening Times that Blantyre Vics' management duo David Greig and Scott Mills chose his midfield playmaker Davie Dickson for their all-time Junior dream team.

He is delighted to see the experienced Dixie receiving plaudits, but finds it odd with the two sides due to lock horns in tomorrow's Euroscot Eng Sectional League Cup finale.

"We don't have to second-guess who Greggy has pinpointed as our dangerman," said Queeny ahead of the Gasworks Park contest.

"Dixie's taken a bit of a ribbing about it and so has Tony Fraser after being named as one of the greats by the St Anthony's backroom boys this week.

"Hopefully, if Blantyre go out of their way to shut down their influence then extra space and time will be afforded to the likes of Ross Foley, Gary Mackie, Gary Carroll and Scott Murphy."

Cumbernauld are resigned to not having prolific hitman Chris Zok, who has cracked ribs, although he is likely to figure on the bench. United have, though, been floored by a suspension ruling out full-back James Brown.

Queeny said: "James was sent off in our Scottish Cup tie against Beith last weekend after just 30 seconds when the referee deemed his catching Joe Bradley with an arm was deliberate elbowing.

"We had thought Scottish Cup red cards would be dealt with at the next SJFA meeting, but the rules have changed and an automatic three-game suspension now kicks in.

"He said the collision was purely accidental and wanted to state his case before the powers-that-be, but we couldn't take the chance of him being hammered and ruled out until the New Year if they considered his appeal to be frivolous."

Dixie, 38, is going for a third victory with different teams in the Sectional League Cup, and says United can seize the day.

He played with Rutherglen Glencairn when they beat Port Glasgow and with the Petershill side that beat Shotts Bon Accord, and says: "I'd love to get my hands on the trophy again, but that's a huge ask with Blantyre going along so strongly and boasting former team-mates of mine in Lee McShane, Davie Green and David Galt, who I hold in the highest regard.

"They also include a terrific couple of forwards in Craig Smith and Davie Kirkwood. But we have some cracking young players at Cumbernauld. We know it will be a tough game, but every one of us is looking forward to it."

Dickson's bid for a hat-trick of winner's medals in the contest contrasts with the aim of inspirational Vics skipper Terry Hewitt, 26, seeking his first-ever Junior football medal.

The stopper last stepped on to a winner's podium in Under-21 football, but says: "We have put a number of quality teams to the sword in order to get to this stage and are not running scared of going up against any team in a one-off game."

Greig said: "Scott and I recently celebrated two years in charge at Castle Park and they have been fabulous times which we would love to cap with Blantyre's first trophy in 20 years.

"We have watched Cumbernauld twice and they are a good side, so nothing but an A-plus performance from each and every one of our players will suffice if we are to come out on top."

The Vics chief has two

injury concerns that will

ensure he does not name a team until closer to kick-off.
