Cumbernauld United picked up their first silverware prize in more than 30 years yesterday with a stunning Euroscot Eng Sectional League Cup Final triumph against Blantyre Vics.

United and their manager John Queen came good thanks to unbelievably netting two goals in the final four minutes of a pulsating final to salvage a 3-3 regulation time draw and earn a penalty-kicks shoot-out which they won by a 4-2 scoreline.

Said the delighted Queeny as he celebrated with his relatives: "I lost three finals as a player with Shettleston and one with Baillieston so to win as a manager is just a dream come true.

"The guys looked dead and buried at one point but we somehow managed to hang on in there and take it to spot-kicks which I always felt would go our way.

"My condolences to Blantyre Vics who must have felt they had one hand on the cup but as they say it's never over until the fat lady otherwise known as our goalkeeping coach Ian Wilson sings."

Blantyre had forged ahead through an individual Craig Smith score, but they were rocked when a clever Tony Fraser pass set up Gavin Mackie to rifle home an equaliser.

But goals from Lee McShane following a goalmouth scramble and a sublime half-volley by Davie Kirkwood right on the half time whistle appeared to put the Vics in easy street at 3-1.

They should have added to their lead in the second half but a failure to convert their chances came back to haunt them when Gary Carroll atoned for missing three one-on-ones with a well struck shot to make the score 3-2 in 86 minutes.

Cumbernauld went for broke in pushing players upfield, and deep into injury time they were rewarded as substitute Chris Zok poked the ball home from close range for a 3-3 outcome.

Ryan McGarry and Smith missed from the spot, leaving another United replacement - George Scott - to seal a dramatic success.

Beaten gaffer Davie Greig admitted: "Losing three goals in the same game is so unlike us, but that's not to take away from a fully deserved win by the better team on the day - Cumbernauld United.

"It's a sore one but we will come back from this defeat, wiser and more knowledgeable than before."
