Cumbernauld United's results indicate they have hit the ground running but boss John Queen swears his side have still to find their feet.

The Guy's Meadow outfit's blistering start to their Euroscot Eng Sectional League Cup campaign has brought straight wins over Rossvale (3-0), Dunipace (2-1) and Rob Roy (1-0).

That leaves them needing only a point from tomorrow night's game against Kilsyth Rangers to finish top of the Section Eight pile.

But hard-nosed boss Queeny is refusing to allow thoughts of a quarter-final place to detract him from shuffling his United pack in order to dole out equal amounts of game time to his playing charges.

He said: "We are where we are in spite of my constant chopping and changing but I make no apologies for this approach.

"Right at the outset I declared we would treat the Euroscot section games as pre-season warm-ups so it should be no surprise that we are not playing with any real consistency.

"We have won our games but that's all down to the players pulling out all the stops to try to keep their place in the team.

"Six changes were made to our Rossvale line-up for the game against Dunipace in leaving out the likes of Chris Zok, Scott Murphy and Davie Dickson but the response from replacements James Steel, Gary Gibson and Ross Foley was nothing short of superb.

"We made another raft of changes against Rob Roy last Saturday by reinstating Dixie and a few others while also introducing Kevin Finlayson and Gary Mackie to the fray and we demonstrated battling qualities to come good despite serving up our worst performance of the season to date.

"Cumbernauld have not qualified for the cup's last eight for many years - and certainly not in my time at Guy's Meadow - but my approach will not alter so you can bet there will be more changes for tomorrow night's game."

In line for a recall is full- back Craig Borland, who has returned to the United fold after being released by Pollok, whom he had joined during the close season. It remains to be seen whether United supporters will get a first glimpse of experienced winger Simon Eeles, who has been kept out of playing action by a niggling injury.

REIGNING Euroscot Eng Cup holders Clydebank plus Arthurlie and Carluke could also secure last eight places with victories tomorrow, as indeed could Blantyre Vics, who last qualified for the competition's latter stages in 1995/96 season, when they went on to beat Pollok and lift the silverware.

There were goals galore in two Ardagh Glass Cup encounters held over until last night because of Auchinleck Talbot and Hurlford United's involvement in William Hill Scottish Cup preliminary round ties.

Talbot went top of the Section Four pile and all but secured their place in the last eight with a 6-0 crushing of Muirkirk despite having to play with 10 men for the most part following the red carding of midfielder Willie Boyd.

Graeme Wilson (2), Bryan Young, Kier Milliken, Dwayne Hyslop and Mark Armour were all on target for the rampant Bot.

Hurlford enjoyed a similar cruise to victory over Irvine Vics with their four goals netted by Ross Robertson, Chris Robertson, Paul McKenzie and John Dempster in the first half.
