A clash of the titans was the outcome of last night's Scottish Junior Cup fourth-round draw after reigning cup holders Hurlford United were drawn against East Region kingpins Bo'ness United.

The Evening Times office was the venue as Tony McInally's revamped Pollok came out of the hat with Cumnock who are sure to provide a test of the Southside club's re-emergence as one of the game's leading teams.

And other top ties saw Clydebank paired against manager Budgie McGhie's former club Shettleston, while Arthurlie landed a plum tie with Rob Roy.

But those head-to-head clashes were put in the shade by the Blair Park showdown.

Hurlford's sure-to-be epic confrontation with Bo'ness was certainly not to the liking of Ford gaffer Darren Henderson, even though he is looking forward to crossing dugout swords with close friend Alan McGonigal.

Darren admitted: "The only thing to be happy about is we are at home and it is imperative we make it count because Bo'ness are undoubtedly one of the major forces at this level and they did Junior football proud by reaching the fourth round of the big Scottish.

"I've known Alan for years and he has Paul Murphy in his side who is a top player and an old team-mate of mine."

Tommy Sloan, manager of 10-times winners Auchinleck Talbot, was not unhappy at landing an away tie against Central Second Division minnows Port Glasgow in light of the Hurlford v Bo'ness contest.

He said: "It's normally ourselves who get the tie of the round, so I'm just happy to be on the outside looking in at this one. Both teams are potential cup winners so I fancy a cracking game is in the offing and whosoever comes out on top will be fancied to go all the way."

The prospect of a Newlandsfield clash against Ayrshire cracks Cumnock had Lok boss Tony McInally wetting his lips in anticipation.

He declared: "Cumnock are a club with a fabulous cup tradition and have a new manager, John McKeown, in place who will see the game against ourselves as a dream chance to make his mark.

"A number of their players are very familiar to us, particularly Colin Williamson and Steven McGuire, who played under me at Shotts Bon Accord and there's also the young winger, Owen Ronald, who was on Rob Roy's books last season.

"Looking at the quality of their playing squad only underlines what a tough game awaits us, but it could have been a lot tougher looking at the other ties."

Arthurlie's recently- installed boss Craig McEwan revelled in a home draw and promised a warm reception for Rabs assistant Paul Ronald, whom played alongside at Senior level.

However, the Kirkintilloch outfit's Stewart Maxwell reckons his players will need to be at their best to survive a trip to Dunterlie.

He said: "Arthurlie's results since Southy took up the helm have been nothing short of outstanding, but the opportunity to take the scalp of a higher league side will hopefully fire up our players on the day."

The luck of the draw continued to elude Blantyre Vics, who face a trip through East to take on highly-fancied Newtongrange Star. It is a 10th consecutive away game in cup football for David Greig and his players.

The Vics boss scoffed: "Just for once it would have been nice to come out of the hat first because doing so well in the cups is costing us a fortune."

Clydebank, awaiting the visit to Holm Park of Super First Division leading lights Shettleston, will evoke memories of last season's League Cup clash which saw the Bankies level matters with an injury time-equaliser before winning on penalty kicks .

Town boss Hugh Kelly said: "Budgie's teams always play slick, passing football and I'm expecting no different this time around."

Meanwhile, a quirk of coincidence saw to it that two teams who only qualified for the last 32 following cup wins last Saturday - Lesmahagow and Johnstone Burgh - were pitted against each other at Craighead Park.

And the highest third round goalscorers Rossvale - they ran out 7-0 winners over Lugar Boswell - delighted in coming out of the hat first against Musselburgh Athletic.

Team boss Martin Lauchlan admitted: "This is unknown territory for everyone at Rossvale and we are just enjoying the adventure.

"We were going to be underdogs regardless of who we got so Musselburgh will be favourites coming here, but we can give them a game."
