Reece McGillion is hoping he can stop former Pollok team-mate Davie Winters putting a spoke in Shettleston's promotion aspirations.

The two clubs renew their Glasgow rivalries at Greenfield Park this afternoon in a top-of-the-table Super First Divison clash

Big stopper McGillion, signed by Town boss Hugh Kelly in the close season, is adamant he and centre-back partner Reon Juskowiack will have to hobble Winters to further their step-up dreams.

The 21-year-old spent the last two months of last season sharing a Newlandsfield dressing room with Winters.

It was long enough to show him the penalty-box danger of the one-time Dundee United forward.

He said: "I'm not surprised Davie is doing well and is in the spotlight: he looked a class act the minute he walked through the doors at Pollok.

"He is supremely confident, always looking for a pop at goal, and the bigger the match, the better he plays.

"So we must put his gas at a peep to stand any chance of knocking my old club from their top-of-the-table perch."

McGillion's move across the city has been better than expected and he's now ever-present in the Shettleston side.

He added: "I'm feeling the benefits of playing regularly in my preferred central defensive role and I'm probably fitter and more confident than I've ever been since stepping down into the Junior ranks..

"We as a group of players took time to click and had indifferent Sectional League Cup results but we have gelled together now to make a decent start in our league campaign and be sitting unbeaten with four points from a possible six.

"Truth is we really should be boasting the same 100% record as Pollok after giving Largs Thistle a pummelling last weekend, only to come away with a 2-2 draw..

"Tony McInally and his players are favourites to be crowned champions and they will come here expecting to pick up three points but I fancy we can give them a game."

Town gaffer Kelly admitted: "To be facing one of the big clubs in Junior football is exciting as we have strived to get back to this stage for a number of years.

"I'd like to think we can give a good account of ourselves though it's a hammer-blow to be missing two key players in Brian McEwan, who is injured, and Scott Anson.

"Kyle Robertson and Chrissy McCormick played up front and dovetailed very well against Largs but the likes of Ryan McCrone also deserves the chance to shine on the big stage and I fancy his pace might hurt Pollok on the day. "

Pollok's only injury worry is striker Alan McKenzie. A groin injury forced his substitution in last weekend's 2-1 defeat of Irvine Vics.

Lok boss McInally said: "Alan's injury has responded well to treatment so we will give him right up until kick-off time to prove his fitness.

"But if he fails to pass muster we'll have no hesitation in promoting Kevin Bradley further forward as we did against the Vics when he linked up superbly with Davie Winters and netted one of our goals."

Recent signings John Sweeney and Findlay Frye are tipped to get the nod to start as is Macca's latest recruit, possibly the first French signing by Pollok, ex-Clyde midfielder Giuseppe Capuano, who made a good debut against the Vics.

The Lok chief said: "Giuseppe provides balance as he is different from our other midfielders. He's a mind-the-shop type who gives cover when guys around him are racing up to support our forwards. He's a good player whose strengths will be more apparent in places like Greenfield Park."

Joint front-runners Rutherglen Glencairn will go all-out to cash in on any Pollok slip by taking three points away to injury-hit Thorniewood United.

And a testing time awaits Rob Roy, facing Greenock at Ravenscraig Stadium. Rabs veteran Paul Finnigan said: "We as a team are still finding our feet and need to appreciate that playing nice football is not the be-all and end-all.

"Places like Greenock call for a more aggressive mentality. Tomorrow will be as tough and competitive a 90 minutes as we will to face all season."

In other top Super First encounters, Cumbernauld will be trying to get back on the rails at home to Neilston. Yoker head down to Ayrshire to take on a winless but determined Irvine Vics.
