Magnificent seven for modest Michael

MODEST Michael Roberts has branded himself the apprentice despite the fact he has chalked up a magnificent seven unbeaten record over the first year of his professional boxing career.

The 25-year-old will feature as the joint top of the bill for the first time on tomorrow night's Morrison Promotions show at the Gorbals Leisure Centre, and is determined to chalk up win number eight when he faces Belfast bruiser Michael Harvey.

But in these straitened times, when the Noble Art is besmirched by trash talking, outlandish claims and overblown ambitions, the boy from Balornock is a refreshing change from the braggarts.

He said: "I am pleased with the fact I have managed to get to seven fights and remained unbeaten, but I see myself as very much an apprentice in terms of where my professional career is.

"I am lucky enough to be trained by Billy Nelson at the Fighting Scots gym and the chance to work and learn under Billy is so important to me.

"For this fight alone I have also been lucky enough to train with Paul Appleby, the former British champion and, of course, I regularly get to spar with Ricky Burns.

"With that quality of sparring and Billy to watch over me and make sure I am absorbing everything, I can only get better.

"So tomorrow night is a big opportunity for me to put into practise everything I have been learning at the Fighting Scots gym."

While Roberts' promoter and manager Alex Morrison is projecting his young prodigy towards domestic title contention in the next year or so, once more the pragmatic pugilist refuses to get carried away.

The unbeaten super-featherweight said: "I know big Alex has plans for me, but you can only concentrate on your next fight. Appearing as a joint top of the bill carries a bit more pressure and it is up to me to deal with that expectation.

"Harvey is a seasoned and experienced professional who has plenty of ring time behind him and it will be up to me to deal with the wee traps that the old pros lay for you.

"I am proud of my unbeaten record and determined to keep it going. But at the same time it is vital that win or lose I keep learning.

"So I am completely focused on producing the best performance of my career tomorrow night and justifying the faith everyone in my camp has put into my development. That has to be the target every time I climb through the ropes."

A few briefs for tomorrow night's six-fight show are still available on 0141 554 0000/7777 priced £45 and £60.
