RYAN McSTAY today hailed departing Albion Rovers boss Paul Martin as one of the greatest in the Coatbridge club's history after he stepped down as manager at the weekend.

Martin told his Cliftonhill players he would be leaving the club just minutes before a dramatic penalty shoot-out play-off success over Stranraer saw the club retain their place in the Irn-Bru Second Division.

Martin's assistant manager, Todd Lumsden, will assume the Rovers reins for next season, and McStay paid tribute to the departing boss as the Coatbridge club look forward to another campaign in Scotland's third tier.

He said: "We had heard rumours that he gaffer might be going to step down, but we weren't told until he had us in the huddle before the penalties.

"He said not to win it for him, but to do it for ourselves. After the game, we dedicated it to him because he has been fantastic for the club since taking over.

"He has taken Rovers from the bottom of the Third Division and stabilised us in the Second Division.

"He must be one of the best managers Albion Rovers have ever had.

"I have only been there a season, but he has been great for me. He is a great manager and a great guy as well.

"It was an emotional day for us. We went out and celebrated after the game and had a chat and a few drinks.

"We wish him all the best and hopefully he can get over his health problems and back into management soon.

"Todd is taking over for next season and I am sure he will do a good job with us.

"He has been at the club for a while and has worked closely with Paul, so we are looking forward to next season."
