And the new Partick Thistle star hopes his switch to Firhill will give him the foundations for a successful career as he makes the step up from Scotland's bottom tier.
The defender spurned the advances of local club Queen of the South to join Jackie McNamara's Jags ranks ahead of the new season, signing a two-year deal to bring an end to his time with Third Division Annan.
The 22-year-old is no stranger to hard graft and the youngster can't wait to get down to work with Thistle when they return for pre-season training.
He said: "I will keep working away until I start pre-season with Thistle.
"It is just a wee firm, it is a friend of the family, Bill Sim, who used to play with Queen of the South.
"He has been good with me giving me advice and he was happy for me to move on and further my career.
"I am building houses and conservatories and that kind of thing.
"It is good and something I enjoy, especially when the weather is good.
"I do at least 40 hours a week, but that does go up quite a lot with early mornings and late finishes.
"I don't mind the work though, I enjoy it. It will be a bit of change in lifestyle coming to Thistle and playing football full-time.
"I will come up and stay in Glasgow and just travel back to Dumfries and see my family when I can.
"I was born there and I have never really been away from Dumfries so it will be a bit of a change for me but I am looking forward to it."
Muirhead joins Hugh Murray, Steven Lawless and Sean Welsh in joining the Jags ahead of the new season, with Firhill boss McNamara targeting a significant improvement from their sixth-placed finish last time out.
And the youngster hopes he can make a significant impact as Thistle set their sights at the summit of the standings.
He said: "The manager has said that his aim this season is to push for promotion. There is a good group of players here.
"The chance to play full-time football was a big attraction for me and I can't wait to get started and get playing.
"I am not going to say we will definitely win the league but we will give it a shot and see what happens."
Thistle will not be hosting Queen of the South on July 14. The clubs had spoken about a pre-season meeting but plans have yet to be finalised.
