Andy Murray today cast doubt on Greg Rusedski being Great Britain’s next Davis Cup captain.

Rusedski was considered to be the front-runner to replace John Lloyd after Tim Henman ruled himself out of contention.

But the Scot believes the LTA has the chance to look beyond the obvious candidates.

Murray, who meets Sweden’s Robin Soderling tonight for a place in the semi-finals of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, said: “I think it’s important to make a statement with the next captain.

“It’s kind of a transition period. The one problem I have with Davis Cup is, since I was young, the only people mentioned as captains are ones that are either famous or are the best players of the previous generation.

“However, regardless of what the players come up with, the LTA will be the ones that decide.”

Murray is sure to be an important figure in who does get the job and he has already dismissed any idea that his coach, Miles Maclagan, could share his duties with the Davis Cup team.

However, one of his former coaches, Leon Smith from Glasgow, could come into the reckoning. Smith is head of player development at the LTA and is considered a shining light in the organisation.

Meanwhile, Rafael Nadal secured his place in the last four at Indian Wells with a 6-4, 7-6 win over Tomas Berdych.
