TOMMY GEMMELL was one of the famous Lisbon Lions and scored the equalising goal against Inter Milan in the 1967 European Cup final.

He had an illustrious playing career with Celtic from 1961 to 1971...

JOE SIXTY (Bishopbriggs) – Is it true that Tommy Gemmell never missed a penalty for Celtic?

Not quite. Big Tam took 34 penalties for Celtic and missed on three occasions. Altogether, he made 418 appearances for Cthe Hoops and scored 64 goals in total; not bad for a full-back. His only goal in 18 international matches for Scotland also came from the penalty spot.

HUGHIE WILSON (Govan) – I was at the Rangers v Elgin game a couple of weeks ago. I seem to remember that circa 1977 they met in the Scottish Cup when Elgin were still in the Highland League. I think Rangers won comfortably. Have you any match details?

Rangers met Elgin City on February 26, 1977, in a Scottish Cup fourth-round tie. Elgin performed heroically, but could not prevent Rangers winning 3-0.

Colin Jackson, Tommy McLean and Alex MacDonald were the scorers. The teams lined up:

Rangers: Kennedy, Jardine, Greig, Forsyth, Jackson, Watson, McLean, McDougall, Parlane, MacDonald and Johnstone.

Elgin City: Lawrie, Nicol, Buchan, Wilson, Finnie, Dingwall, Kellas, Douglas, Bavidge, Davidson and Cowie.

Our records show a crowd estimated at 18,000.

JAMES (Knightswood) – The recent draw for the Scottish Communities League Cup gave Queen's Park an away tie against St Johnstone. Billy Stark, the Scotland Under-21 coach, managed both these clubs. Can you provide details?

Billy managed St Johnstone from 2001 to 2004 and then took over at Queen's till 2008. In season 2006/7, he guided Queen's Park to promotion playing an attractive style of attacking football.

HONEST MAN (Glasgow) – I am looking for information on a high-scoring Second Division match between Cowdenbeath and Ayr United, which I am sure took place in the late fifties.

There was a match played on December 21, 1957, at Central Park, when Cowdenbeath beat Ayr United by six goals to five.

The first half saw the Fife side lead 4-1. The second half saw a complete change as Ayr hit back with four goals to lead 5-4.

In an exciting finish, Cowdenbeath struck twice to win the game 6-5.

Goalscorers were Craig (2), Quinn (2), Gilfillan and Adams for Cowdenbeath, and Price (2), Bradley, McMillan and McIntyre for Ayr United.
