DAVID MOYES has vowed to build a team capable of making Manchester United a Champions League force once again.

A 3-1 defeat by Bayern Munich last night all but confirmed the Red Devils would miss the competition for the first time since the 1995-96 season next year.

Patrice Evra's thunderbolt had given United a surprise lead in the quarter-final second leg at the Allianz Arena but it lasted just 22 seconds.

Bayern attacked from the restart and Mario Mandzukic nodded in an equaliser. Then Thomas Muller's scuffed finish put Bayern ahead and Arjen Robben wrapped up the 4-2 aggregate win with a fine solo goal.

Moyes was left to lament his side's defending after they had put themselves in such a great position, but argued there was not too much between the teams.

He said. "You're told as a schoolboy not to concede right away but we conceded too quickly and it was always going to be a tough night.

"I think we needed to give ourselves five or 10 minutes but they went right up the other end and scored.

"I don't know if it was about concentration. We were thrilled with our goal but we have enough experience. I didn't think we did an awful lot wrong. We played well and our performance really pleased me but a couple of small errors cost me."

Moyes pointed to two deflections in the build-up to Bayern's third, claiming luck was against his side, but either way he now faces a long summer of rebuilding.

"We've not got Champions League football but I believe its not far away and hopefully it's only one year," he said.

"We've got to rebuild and our focus now is getting a team together to get back in this competition because it's a really good competition and we've really enjoyed it.

"My focus is on getting a side together to get back in the Champions League. That's our main objective now.

"We're looking to spend the right money on players who are available. Any players we've discussed it with are more than happy to join Manchester United. They know not it's not a long-term thing being out of the Champions League."

Atletico Madrid reached the semi-finals of the Champions League for the first time after a 1-0 win over Spanish rivals Barcelona. Koke's early strike was enough to send Atletico through to the last four.
