Chelsea goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer today hailed a "good job" from the Blues after they held Atletico Madrid to a 0-0 draw in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final in Spain.

Jose Mourinho's side created few goalscoring opportunities but produced a performance that was full of defensive grit to give themselves a decent chance of emerging from next week's second leg with a place in the final.

And Schwarzer said: "I think everyone was right up for it, as you would expect. We have world-class players in the side and we didn't expect anything less.

"We knew if we could match their determination, that our quality could come through.

"Okay, we didn't create too many chances, but we did a good job."

Schwarzer came on in the 18th minute to replace the injured Petr Cech and make only his eighth appearance for the Londoners.

Cech appeared to dislocate his shoulder in a fall and could miss the rest of the season.

Schwarzer had also deputised for Cech in Saturday's 2-1 Barclays Premier League defeat to Sunderland, and asked about stepping in against Atletico, the Australian said: "It is always a tough thing to do. But I didn't have a chance to think about it, I just tried to do my job."

Chelsea also had captain John Terry go off due to an injury, while Frank Lampard and John Obi Mikel picked up bookings that rule them out of the second leg.

Asked how, given those problems, he saw the tie now, Schwarzer added: "It is very tough, but you have to take each game as it comes. We now have to think about a huge game on Sunday against Liverpool."
