A LUCKY last-gasp goal by Jerome Boateng gave Bayern Munich a 1-0 win over Manchester City in their opening Champions League match in Germany.

The ex-City defender fired in a shot that took a deflection off the back of midfielder Mario Goetze and arced into the net.

It was a cruel end for keeper Joe Hart, who had defied Pep Guardiola's team with a succession of superb saves.

City sub Sergio Aguero almost scored a late, late equaliser but his low shot dragged wide of the post.

The gutted England keeper said: "We fought hard all night against a good team and we had our own chances.

"We knew it would be a tough game. The goal has come from a deflection in the end, and Jerome has come back to haunt us.

"He's a good guy and someone I got on well with when he was at City. You can't hold personal grudges on the pitch."

Scorer Boateng said: "The ball came perfectly and I just drilled it in. City made it a good game but we had the chances. We deserved to win."

Meanwhile, Chelsea drew 1-1 against Schalke at Stamford Bridge with their forwards failing to sparkle in the absence of on-form Diego Costa.

Cesc Fabregas put the home side ahead early on but Klaas-Jan Huntelaar pulled the Germans level in the 62nd minute.

Chelsea then missed a series of chances, with 36-year-old Didier Drogba especially at fault.

But Jose Mourinho refused to criticise the Ivory Coast frontman.

The Blues boss said: "He had a positive game. I'm not disappointed with him because of one inch, the difference between him scoring a goal or not scoring a goal.

"We had very good chances to go 2-0 ahead but we didn't take them.

"After they equalised only one team tried to win and only one team had so many chances.

"In the last 15 minutes Remy could have scored, John Terry could have scored, Hazard, too.

"We had so many great situations. That's football. To defend like they did is also football.

"It is a good point for them. Not a fantastic point for us, but a point."

Mourinho revealed he had rested Costa to keep him fit for Sunday's trip to Manchester City.

He explained: "Diego played for Spain against France and came back to us injured. Now we have the problem and have to resolve it the best we can.

"He was not fit to play tonight but we believe he will be able to play on Sunday. If he had started tonight, for sure he could not play on Sunday. We have to go step by step."
