Everton boss Roberto Martinez felt his side were "outstanding" at the back and "lethal" going forward as they ensured progress to the Europa League knockout rounds as Group H winners with a 2-0 victory at Wolfsburg.

The Toffees went ahead just before the break when Romelu Lukaku scored on a counter-attack.

And it was another breakaway effort, notched by Kevin Mirallas in the 75th minute, that wrapped up a fine night's work and secured top spot for Martinez's men with a game to spare.

Martinez said: "We had to defend really well and when we did we defended in numbers. We were patient with that and used the counter-attack to good effect.

"On the transition we were lethal and every time we broke we looked really threatening.

"I thought the two centre-halves (Phil Jagielka and Distin) and (goalkeeper) Tim Howard were outstanding, and the shape of the team helped those three to be at their best."

Martinez also singled out Lukaku for praise, adding: "You don't get many strikers who are so strong and good at running with the ball with that power, pace and clinical finishing."

The only negative for Everton was an injury to midfielder James McCarthy that forced him off in the first half.

Tottenham Hotspur are also through to the Europa League knockout stages but face Uefa sanctions after their Group C tie with Partizan Belgrade was suspended for 10 minutes.

The referee led players off after individuals encroached on to the pitch on three separate occasions in what appeared to be an orchestrated PR stunt.

Mauricio Pochettino's men would eventually triumph 1-0 thanks to Benjamin Stambouli's first goal for the club just after the break.

In a statement last night Spurs said: "Three pitch invaders have been arrested. We apologise to fans for the disruptions caused by this totally unacceptable behaviour."
