Nathaniel Clyne rescued a point for Southampton as they were held to a 1-1 draw at Aston Villa.

The England defender smashed in a late leveller just as Villa were ready to clinch a first win in eight games in front of 25,311 fans - their lowest home Premier League attendance since December, 1999.

Former Celtic goalkeeper Fraser Forster's clanger had gifted Gabby Agbonlahor the opener with the Saints rarely at their fluid best.

They dominated possession but failed to regularly test goalkeeper Brad Guzan while Villa were left to rue Andi Weimann's miss at 1-0.

The point did at least lift Villa, who are without a win in eight games, up to 16th in the Barclays Premier League while Southampton stay second, six points behind leaders Chelsea.

The draw marked Paul Lambert's 100th game in charge of Villa and he recalled Ciaran Clark and Jores Okore.

Lambert was disappointed they had been unable to hang on for the three points, and said: "I thought it was a really good game against a very good side, we had a great chance to go 2-0 up but I couldn't fault the team.

"We've got a lot of players out and I've not bleated about it, but maybe I should bleat about it more. This league is unforgiving and this football club generates pressure whether you're at the top or the bottom. But we need to go on and try to win games."
