NEW signings Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas made an instant impact as Chelsea launched their Premier League title bid with a 3-1 win at promoted Burnley.

The home side took the lead at packed Turf Moor with a superb drive from ex-Falkirk midfielder Scott Arfield.

Three minutes later Costa, a close-season signing from Atletico Madrid, brought the Blues level, firing home after a Fabregas back-heel had set up Branislav Ivanovic for a shot that rebounded off the post.

Chelsea then moved in front when Fabregas provided a beautiful first-time pass to German World Cup winner Andre Schurrle, who confidently drove home. The game was effectively over when Ivanovic slotted in a Fabregas corner in the 34th minute.

Jose Mourinho had selected Thibaut Courtois over Petr Cech in goal and the Belgian showed his quality after the break to deny Arfield a second goal from a curling shot which he tipped wide.

Later on Chelsea brought on Didier Drogba for his first official appearance of his second spell with the club.

Former Arsenal midfielder Fabregas, brought in from Barcelona, had a hand in all three Chelsea goals and struck up an impressive midfield pairing with Eden Hazard.

Afterwards Mourinho said: "We had a good reaction. The first part is that emotionally we were not affected by the goal we conceded.

"We kept playing according to the way we want to play, the players were calm and never lost their composure.

"After that we had a fantastic 20 to 25 minutes with three goals. The second one was a fantastic goal. After that we had control of the game.

"I think we clearly deserved this three points against a side that is going to give a fight to everyone who comes here."

Burnley boss Sean Dyche was realistic about the task his players had faced, saying of Chelsea: "They have so much quality in all areas and can hurt you in any way.

"But we kept going to the end, which was important.

"That mentality will be very important for us over the course of the season."
