LOGIC would suggest either Barcelona or Real Madrid will be crowned champions of La Liga this season but I am not so sure.

Chastened by what happened in May when Atletico Madrid won the title, both clubs have spent heavily this summer in a bid to get their hands on the silverware again.

I wouldn't necessarily put my money on it, though.

Atletico have three major players from their squad - Felipe Luis and Diego Costa joined Chelsea while Thibault Courtois returned to Stamford Bridge at the end of his loan deal - but they still have a strong core, an excellent manager and belief in each other that they can do it again.

It would be asking an awful lot. It would be the achievement of the decade in Spanish football if Diego Simeone was to guide Atletico to another La Liga title this season.

However, I don't think they will disappear back into the pack, they will still have something to say for themselves.

The acquisition of striker Mario Mandzukic from Bayern Munich is an excellent piece of business for them. He's a very good player.

Atletico won't go away but when you look at what Barca and Real have done, they have made real statements.

Winning the Champions League was the priority for Real last season and since then they've gone out and got the 2014 World Cup's leading scorer, James Rodriguez.

I saw a lot of him last season for Monaco. While I thought he was a very good player, I didn't think he would be a £60million player.

BARCA have spent heavily on Luis Suarez and it remains to be seen how he fits into the side with Messi and Neymar and the approach of Luis Enrique.

The Catalan club's new coach is an interesting guy. He struggled at Roma when he tried to implement a new system on the players when they perhaps didn't want it.

It will be different at the Nou Camp. He is a Barcelona man, he has coached the youth team, and he is dealing with players who will buy into his concepts this season.

The one thing Barcelona needed to do was shore up the defence and they've done that this summer with experienced Frenchman Jeremy Mathieu arriving from Valencia along with Belgian stopper Thomas Vermaelen from Arsenal.

Barca had some of the same issues as the Spanish national team, as it was the end of the cycle for several key players and their squad needed to be refreshed a bit.

Now they won't be able to make any more signings until 2016 after losing their appeal against the transfer ban Fifa had imposed on them.

The Clasicos between Real and Barca will stand out again this season. They are mouthwatering prospects when you consider the attacking talent in both teams with Rodriguez added to Bale and Ronaldo in Madrid against Suarez, Messi and Neymar at Barcelona.

When you look at the best players in the world, there are more of them playing in Spain - and even Germany - than in England's Premier League.

It is going to be yet another intriguing season in La Liga and it will be fascinating to see how the title race pans out.
