CELTIC'S greatest achievement was winning the European Cup in 1967, but they also had a consistent record in the competition following their Lisbon victory up until the 73-74 season...

PAT (Muirend) - When Celtic drew Inter Milan in the Europa League I tried telling my grandson about just how successful Celtic had been in European football in the Sixties and Seventies. He was sceptical to say the least. Do you have any data which could help me convince him?

Celtic first played in European competition in season 1962-63 losing a first round Inter Cities Fairs Cup game to Valencia.

In season 63-64 they reached the semi finals of the European Cup Winners Cup before losing to MTK Budapest.

Season 64-65 saw them lose out to Barcelona in the second round of the Fairs Cup.

In 65 - 66 they again reached the semi finals of the Cup Winners Cup before losing controversially to Liverpool.

For the next eight years Celtic took part in European football's most prestigious tournament, the European Cup, and their record is impressive.

Season 66-67: Winners

Season 67-68: First Round

Season 68-69: Quarter Finalists

Season 69-70: Beaten Finalists

Season 70-71: Quarter-Finalists

Season 71-72: Semi-Finalists

Season 7-73: Second Round

Season 73-74: Semi-Finalists

Celtic continue to compete in European football with varying levels of success.

Highlights include their run to the final of the 2002-03 UEFA Cup where they lost 3-2 to Porto and qualifying for the latter stages of the Champions League on three occasions but those heady days of the late Sixties early Seventies do seem a long way off.

BOB (Cumbernauld) - Many years ago football fixtures were regularly played on Christmas Day. Can you tell me the last time football matches were played in Scotland on Christmas Day?

The last scheduled round of league fixtures was for December 25, 1976.

Unfortunately, a combination of reluctance to play and poor weather reduced the games played to only two.

Clydebank drew 2-2 with St Mirren in the First Division and Alloa defeated Cowdenbeath 2-1 in the second Division.

The last time a full set of Christmas Day fixtures was played in Scotland was 1971.

Celtic beat Hearts 3-2 at home, Dundee United beat Dunfermline 2-1 at Tannadice, Kilmarnock beat Morton 4-2 at Rugby Park.

Other results were Airdrie 1-1 Clyde, East Fife 1-1 Motherwell, Falkirk 0-3 Aberdeen, Hibs 0-1 Rangers, Partick 0-1 Ayr and St Johnstone 0-0 Dundee.
