MARSHALL 6 Made a couple of comfortable stops early on but was left flat-footed and helpless as Oxlade-Chamberlain headed home the opener.

WHITTAKER 6 Caught out a couple of times and had a few skirmishes with Welbeck. Could have done better going forward but not the worst performer.

R MARTIN 5 Won't want to see the goals again as England scored far too easily from crosses into the area.

HANLEY 5 Difficult challenge to keep the shackles on a quality Three Lions attack and struggled to cope on a disappointing night.

ROBERTSON 6 Tough night for the former Queen's Park kid against the electric Ox. Made the most of rare rampage forward as he netted his first goal.

BROWN 6 Skipper is accustomed to big nights and big battles in the middle of the park. Decent performance before being replaced at the break.

MULGREW 5 Was one of the Dark Blue heroes against Ireland but wasn't as influential among starrier company last night. Switched to centre-back midway through second half.

MALONEY 5 Couldn't repeat his heroics of Friday night. Didn't see enough of the ball in the right areas.

NAISMITH 6 Put in a shift as ever but had a frustrating evening. Too often on the periphery.

ANYA 4 Got little joy out of the impressive Clyne. Couple of decent runs down the flank but not creative enough.

C. MARTIN 4 Replaced Steven Fletcher at the head of the attack in the only change from the Ireland triumph. Never really involved and got no sight of goal.

SUBS

GORDON 4 (for Marshall) Had to pick the ball out his net seconds after his arrival and again late on as Rooney bagged a brace.

FLETCHER 4 (for Brown) Used to mixing it with England's calibre of players but couldn't salvage Scotland's dreams.

MORRISON 3 (for Martin) Couldn't slice open England's defence from the middle of the park.

BANNAN 3 (for Anya) Had little chance to make an impression.

MAY 3 (for Hanley) Looked lively on his Dark Blues bow.

RUSSELL 3 (for Maloney) Made an instant impact as he set up Robertson for Scotland's brief moment of joy.
