Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has not been in his position for a week, but he has already made an impression on Wayne Rooney.

Van Gaal will take charge of his first game as United boss tonight when the Red Devils face LA Galaxy in Pasadena.

After taking Holland to the last four of the World Cup in Brazil, Van Gaal was only able to assume his position at Old Trafford a week ago.

The squad then flew to California last Friday and have since been undertaking double training sessions to get them back to full fitness.

And Rooney has been impressed by what he has seen of the new manager so far.

"It has been good meeting the manager and the new coaching staff," he said. "The first couple of training sessions have been good and everyone is looking forward to getting the games underway.

"We've got a new manager with different ideas - we have to train well and listen to what he wants us to do and take that on to the pitch."

The new United boss wants to streamline his squad by the start of the season and, although it would be a huge shock if he decided to dispense with Rooney, the striker still has a lot to prove to the Dutchman.

After a lacklustre World Cup, Rooney will be determined to show he still has what it takes to cut it at the top level, and he will also be trying to stake his claim for the United captaincy, which is vacant following the departure of Nemanja Vidic.

"We have to go out there and show what we can do and show every day in training what different qualities we have as players and a team," the United striker said.

"Everyone wants to impress a new manager and that's what we're aiming to do."

Executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has left the four-match tour after just three days.

United insist he has returned to the UK for "general business reasons", and not for any transfer dealings.

United confirmed the £1.2million sale of left-back Patrice Evra to Juventus on Monday.

Meanwhile, Borussia Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp has quickly stamped on speculation that Mats Hummels and Marco Reus could be leaving the club this summer.

Centre-back Hummels has been mooted as being close to joining United for €20million, while midfielder Reus has been placed on Liverpool's wanted list.

Addressing talk of a deal for Hummels to go to Old Trafford, Klopp said: "What was today's rumour? Mats to Man United? For how much? Twenty million? For an amount like that, you can forget about it."

Klopp aded: "Marco and Mats will be playing for Dortmund next season."
