SCOTLAND striker Robert Snodgrass is almost certainly out of the Euro 2016 opener in Germany after suffering suspected knee ligament damage.

Hull's new £6million signing damaged his knee in their opening-day Premier League win over QPR at Loftus Road.

Snodgrass, 26, was forced off at half-time and looks certain to be missing for a considerable amount of time.

That would be a major blow to Scotland boss Gordon Strachan ahead of the start of the European Championship qualifiers next month.

Hull manager Steve Bruce said: "Snodgrass is a concern. He twisted his knee. He's in a brace and crutches at the moment. We fear ligament damage. If it is, he'll obviously be out for a long time."

Snodgrass will undergo tests today to establish the extent of his injury.

Meanwhile, German midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger is also set to miss the Euro 2016 clash after failing to recover from a knee injury.

The Bayern Munich star was suffering from knee tendon problems during the World Cup in Brazil but he still played superbly for Germany as they lifted the trophy.

Schweinsteiger will miss the start of the new Bundesliga season with Bayern after manager Pep Guardiola revealed the influential 30-year-old isn't even back running in training yet.

And he will almost certainly have no chance of returning in time for the visit of Strachan's side to Dortmund next month.

Guardiola revealed: "Bastian is injured. He will miss the start of the new season. We don't yet have a possible return date for him."

Germany have already been rocked by the retirement of captain Philipp Lahm and all-time World Cup top scorer Miroslav Klose. Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker is also expected to call time on his international career.
