Nemanja Vidic is convince Manchester United are heading back to the big time under Louis van Gaal.

Vidic left United this summer having amassed 15 trophies during his eight years at the club.

His final season at Old Trafford proved to be a trophyless and joyless experience for the Serb though.

Under David Moyes' stewardship, United ended the campaign in seventh position - their worst finish in the Premier League era.

But with former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager Van Gaal now at the helm, Vidic thinks things are looking up for United.

"Van Gaal has a lot of experience, he has trained a lot of teams in a lot of leagues and that shows he knows what he is doing," the new Inter Milan centre-back said after playing United in a friendly .

"I believe he can do good work and the players think the same.

"They are happy with what they are doing and for that reason it will not be difficult for them this year."

Despite his praise for Van Gaal, who has a far more illustrious CV than Moyes, Vidic does not think leaving United for Inter was the wrong move.

"I don't have regrets," said Vidic after the game. "That's in the past. What I must do now is look to the future. I am a fan of Manchester United and I hope both teams do well this year."

Meanwhile, Paul Scholes is yet to hear from the club's new manager Louis van Gaal and feels it is "probably a bit too late now" in terms of being offered a coaching position by them.

Scholes was part of the coaching staff at the end of last season when Ryan Giggs took over on an interim basis following Moyes' dismissal.

The Red Devils were keen for Scholes to have a role again, but that was cast into doubt this week as it emerged the 39-year-old has signed up to be a pundit for both BT Sport and ITV over the 2014-15 campaign.

Scholes said: "I have not spoken to the new manager and there is no need for him to speak to me really.

"I only helped Ryan for a few weeks at the end of the season and I wasn't on a contract. I didn't have a job with the club and that is no different now."

Asked if he would be interested if an offer was forthcoming from United, Scholes said: "It is probably too late now. I couldn't wait around forever.

"I had the offers from television, I had to make my mind up if I wanted to take them on and I've decided to go ahead with them."
