Arsene Wenger hailed Arsenal's spirit after two last-gasp goals secured a 2-1 Champions League Group D win over Anderlecht.

Kieran Gibbs and Lukas Podolski netted in the 89th and 90th minutes to rescue a precious victory for the Gunners on Wenger's 65th birthday.

Arsenal sit second in the pool with six points from their three games, with German side Borussia Dortmund leading the way on nine points.

"We kept going and managed to score two good goals because we had the spirit and refused to lose the game," Wenger said.

"Anderlecht played well and you see that this country produces top-class players.

"It was vital for us to have a chance to qualify. We are in a strong position now.

"Galatasaray and Anderlecht have only one point, we have six and Dortmund nine, so it's down to us now to win our home games and we are through."

Wenger remains confident that Arsenal can still top Group D ahead of Dortmund and said: "It's in our hands.

"Let's just qualify and then we will see how far we can go."

Goalscorer Gibbs joined his manager in commending Arsenal's perseverance.

"Credit to the boys - we didn't give up," the England full-back said. "It wasn't easy to come here and we definitely made a statement now about what we want to do.

"We kept going and it was difficult but we've managed to get the result in the end which we wanted.

"The boys are working really hard every day and we are determined to do well for the team and everybody is fighting for each other."
