The stage is set for one of the biggest speedway meetings to be held in Glasgow in the modern era.

The Peugeot International Speedway Championship on Sunday will bring together riders from as far afield as Australia, Slovenia, the Czech Republic and Denmark to compete across 22 heats for a £10,000 prize fund.

The meeting has attracted 16 stars of the sport - many who compete in the top tier of British speedway and on the continent.

Some of the riders taking part have this year taken the step up onto the world stage - including Australian World Cup star Nick Morris and British Grand Prix wild card Craig Cook.

The line-up includes a few of the sport's up-and-coming stars - such as 19-year-old Aussie Jack Holder, younger brother of 2012 World Champion Chris; hotly-tipped Ziga Kovacic, 17, from Slovenia - who'll be racing in the UK for the first time - and Glasgow's own Englishman James Sarjeant, 21.

There'll be plenty of interest for Scottish speedway fans in the shape of Edinburgh's in-form Justin Sedgmen (Australia) and Glasgow duo Richard Lawson (Great Britain) and Aaron Summers (Australia). Other riders taking part include the Danish starlet Jonas B Andersen, Belle Vue and Somerset man Josh Grajczonek, from Australia, Czech rider Matej Kus and former Team GB squad member Richie Worrall - who produced heroics at Ashfield just last week when he fought from last to first within a couple of laps of one heat.

Summers, 27, who captains Glasgow and has been in sensational form of late, says he can't wait to play host to - and go head-to-head with - some of speedway's best-known names.

And he's appealed to newcomers to get along and witness the thrill of the race for the first time.

He said: “We race bikes with no brakes that can go from 0-60mph quicker than an F1 car.

"If you’ve never seen speedway live before, or you haven't been to a meeting for a long time, this is the one to come and watch.

“Everything is set for it to be a great meeting – I’m really looking forward to it.

“You don’t often get a line-up of such quality riders together at one UK venue, so it’s a fantastic chance to see stars from across the world. I’ve spoken to some of the boys who are taking part and they can’t wait to get on track.

“There are a few of us Aussies racing and I’m sure we’ll show the home guys a thing or two. There are riders from across Europe coming as well – and everyone is capable of winning."

Glasgow were bought in the winter by brothers Gerry and Michael Facenna, of city firm Allied Vehicles, who have since ploughed about £1.5 million into creating a speedway stadium at Ashfield that's fit for the 21st century, as well as putting together the Tigers' best team in years.

Summers added: “The transformation at the Peugeot Ashfield Stadium has been amazing this year and the racing has been great, so there’ll be plenty of entertainment on show with quality in every heat. It’s also a good chance to celebrate all the progress that the club has made in the last few months.”

The meeting starts at 3pm with tickets available to buy in advance via the club's official website - www.glasgowtigers.org.

The club are also offering fans the chance to take home a unique souvenir from the day - by purchasing a signed racejacket worn by their favourite rider - also available via the website.
