Donna Vekic has said it was "very disappointing" to hear controversial Australian Nick Kyrgios use her private life as a means of on-court sledging.

French Open champion Stan Wawrinka was the direct recipient of the jibe from 20-year-old Kyrgios at the Rogers Cup last week in Montreal.

On-court microphones recorded Kyrgios walking to the net and making a lewd comment to second-round opponent Wawrinka.

The remarks was an apparent reference to Australian Davis Cup team-mate Thanasi Kokkinakis, with the girlfriend in question being 19-year-old Croatian player Vekic, who has been linked to Wawrinka since he divorced his wife Ilham in April.

Speaking out for the first time since the incident, which saw Kyrgios reprimanded and fined by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), Vekic explained how she had coped in the aftermath.

She said: "It's not easy but I'm trying to focus on tennis and my next match."

said Vekic.

She added: "I haven't spoken to Kyrgios. But it's a very disappointing thing to be happening in our sport and I hope it won't happen again because it's not a very good image for our sport."

Monte Carlo-based Vekic reached a high of 62nd in the world rankings in July 2013 but has dipped to a current position of 128th, and is competing this week at the 100,000 US dollars (£64,000) International Tennis Federation tournament in Vancouver.

Meanwhile, Andy Murray has said he will enter the Cincinnati Masters with extra confidence after his Rogers Cup success over Novak Djokovic.

Britain's Murray, 28, will face American Mardy Fish in the second round in Cincinnati this week, with the US Open starting at the end of the month.

The Scottish world No.2 ended an eight-match losing run against Djokovic on Sunday.

"I feel good. The last couple of matches I felt like I played very well," said Murray.

"It is quite different conditions here so it will take a few days to get used to them and hopefully I can try to get through my first match somehow and hopefully start to feel better as the week goes on.

"But obviously last week was great for me regardless of how I play here and was a good win for my confidence."
