Glasgow golfer Marc Warren is hoping the links effect can help kick-start a final flourish to the European Tour season.

The 34-year-old tees-up in the £3.3 million Alfred Dunhill Links Championship tomorrow at St Andrews, Carnoustie and Kingbarns with plenty to play for as the campaign moves towards its final stretch.

At No 17 on the circuit’s money list, Warren is set for a place in the Tour’s lucrative Final Series in Turkey, China and Dubai.

And with the Scot sitting on the fringes of the world’s top-50, the three-time European Tour winner is looking for an end of season push to bolster his assault on the European Ryder Cup qualifying list.

Warren, the world No 56, said: “The Final Series is huge now with extra (Ryder Cup) points. That was whole thinking behind taking four weeks off before playing in Germany last weekend. It was to be fresh for hopefully playing 9 of the next 11 weeks and being mentally ready to play them. I’ve changed my schedule a bit and hopefully that pays off. This time of the year it’s not about getting your game sharp it’s about being mentally sharp. There’s a lot to play for, particularly looking ahead to next year, and that’s why I want a strong finish to the season.”

The last time Warren was in St Andrews was for July’s Open Championship. He was making menacing advances on the leaderboard after two rounds and played with fellow Scot, Paul Lawrie, in the penultimate group on the Saturday.

Warren slipped out of contention over the closing 36-holes but he is eager for another profitable trip to the home of golf this weekend.

He added: “Playing in the second last group of the Open was a good experience and another step in the right direction. This week, with the Pro-Am format, is a bit more relaxed than the Open. Hopefully I can have a better finish this weekend than I did then.”

Warren is joined in the field this week by local hopefuls Scott Jamieson and Chris Doak, who are both battling to keep their Tour cards.
