LEON Smith braved the conditions to bring the Davis Cup trophy to Glasgow then admitted he would love the opportunity to bring another showpiece tie to the city of his birth later this year. The Emirates Arena played host to the first round tie with USA and the semi-final with Australia as Andy and Jamie Murray inspired Great Britain to their first victory in the world cup of team tennis in 79 years. While they have the awesome challenge of an away tie with Novak Djokovic's Serbia to negotiate first, Smith said Glasgow would be sure to come into contention as a host city should they make it through to a prospective semi-final tie against Argentina or Italy.

"If we were to get through Serbia, it is a home tie against either Argentina or Italy and Glasgow is always one of the names that comes up - because we haven't experienced an atmosphere like it," said Smith. "Both the ties, the USA one and the Australia one, were the loudest crowds Jamie and Andy had ever played in front of and we would love to come back here."

Smith will find out next week what city and surface the Serbia tie will be played on - although he must wait to discover whether World No 1 Djokovic will make himself available. He was talking in the city's iconic Buchanan Street, where coaches were playing tennis with kids on a makeshift tennis court. The massive Davis Cup trophy was kept indoors, at the nearby St Enoch's centre, but the conditions couldn't dampen Smith's enthusiasm for the trophy tour and Tennis for Kids programme which will accompany it. While the heirloom will be toured around 80 venues in the UK, Smith is recruiting a new tennis task force of 1,000 coaches, tutoring 10,000 children, each of which will receive a free tennis racket.

"This is great," said Smith. "It is the West of Scotland, isn't it? It is what I am used to. Also if you think of the Murrays, we are all brought up in small, outdoor tennis clubs, artificial grass courts, it doesn't have to be anything fancy to take up this game and if you do, who knows what can happen."
